Help identifying drilled Campagnolo crank.

I found this on Yahoo Auction and am tempted to pull the trigger. Can anyone explain to me what the deal is with the "Strada" thing? Is this a Record crank?
More importantly, just by looking can anyone tell me what size inner chain ring the crank is drilled for? This looks too big to be 74 bcd compared to pictures of other cranks drilled for that size on the internet. Looks too small for 100. Are cranks drilled like this safe?

Thanks.

No, Not safe at any speed. Shy away from this crank. If it breaks, you'll upset the little guy's.

This is an old Campy Record crank, pre-1976 or whenever Campy started putting a year number on the back of the crank.

It also is drilled to be used as a triple. Pretty rare even in its day.

Safe? It's a 50 year old bike part YMMV.

"Strada" means "Road" as opposed to"Pista" which means"Track" These are Record cranks that appear to have ben drilled (and tapped?) for a triple set up.

Thanks. Can anyone guess what size the inner ring is supposed to be?

This is 74 BCD.

This is 100 BCD.

It seems to be neither. Can anybody tell?

It's a fairly popular modification, don't know if they're notorious for breakage. It's the cheapest way to add a granny ring to an NR crank, but I think I'd spring for a Red Clover tripleizer ring instead, since I'm in the Clyde range.

Yes, this is a "Record" crank arm. The drilling is aftermarket; factory triple Record cranks have the fluting in the spider stop short of the drill holes for the third ring. As it is aftermarket drilling, you'll need to measure the BCD yourself, but it should be safe to ride.

FWIW the Ofmega made Avocet branded touring crank was 144, 102 and 74 BCD.

Those cranks appear to be without a date code, so they would be from the first decade or so of production.

I'm guessing maybe 85 or 86 BCD based on attempting proportional measurement in Gimp. Assuing 144 bcd for outer rings, I think the PISTA cranks were 151.

Almost certainly an aftermarket modification.

Thanks. 86 seems to be correct. I managed to find this image of a Record crank drilled for 86 and it seems to match. Now where to find a 30T 86 BCD chain ring?

I'd get the crankset in hand before ordering parts. 85bcd is also a possibility, and you should try to measure.
