C&V Show & Shine - Portland During Pedalpalooza This Summer

This summer, Velocult has agreed to host a C&V Show & Shine.

It will be during Pedalpooza, the month long extravaganza of bike rides and activities that we have every summer in Portland, starting June 9. See here for the preliminary Pedalpalooza event calendar, and many more events will be added in the coming months:

S H I F T to bikes!

A Show & Shine is basically a DIY bike show, you bring your cool, pretty, interesting, unusual, or otherwise worthy classic and vintage bike and display it at Velocult for an hour or three - whatever is convenient for you - while checking out the other bikes, talking with fellow C&V folks, having a beer, and so on.

Road bikes, track bikes, vintage MTBs, classic city bikes and randonneurs, vintage BMX and Schwinns, path racers and three-speeds - anything goes, as long as it is classic, vintage, and cool.

Exact date and arrangements are still TBD. EDIT: Sunday June 12, from 2 pm to 5 pm.

EDIT: Note the Heroic Classic & Vintage Ride leaves from Velocult that morning at 8:30 am.

We might have a Best of Show award, play "A Sunday In Hell" or another C&V bike movie on the big screen, put photos of the bikes on the shop's Facebook page, have a short "after-ride", etc. All up for discussion . . . So discuss away!

What would you like to see, how would you organize this, what bike or bikes might you bring to show off?

(Oh, I'll be leading the customary Pedalpalooza C&V Ride, as we've done for the last few years. Date also TBA, likely mid June.)

I'm in... probably.

The C&V Ride, and later Barbecue was fun last year.

I thought that as in the evening last year though. 1:00 PM Saturday June 11 seems to be pretty early.

I'm not quite sure what I'll bring. I suppose it depends whether I get anything "new" ready.

I might bring the Yellow machine back. It saw the Portland Skylines last weekend, but unfortunately without a huge showing of other C&V bikes, other than ExMechanic89's beautiful vintage Peugeot.

I suppose it rides very much on the divide between C&V and Modern. You can decide.

But, what I will say is that with "new bike syndrome", I'm not leaving it chained up outside out of my sight for long.

I am not sure which bikes to bring. Probably

or

Maybe we can get some of the wild vintage MTBs at VC taken down from the ceiling and placed on bike stands, for closer viewing.

I'm hopeful we can get @Drillium Dude to bring one of his drilled and milled Italians.

Between the BF C&V members in, or within spitting (visiting) distance, of Portland, we should have some pretty darn interesting bikes for folks to ogle.

Our bikes will be in the shop, not sitting outside!

I wouldn't think anyone's bike would be left there unattended - I can't imagine Velocult wants responsibility for dozens of C&V bikes.

I think it'll be more like you bring yourself and your bike, put the bike up on one of the display stands (we can probably get some of their inventory moved out of the way), hang out looking and chatting, then take your bike with you when you go. Heck, you can zip-tie a rim to the display stand if you are worried.

Great idea; those things are uniformly stunning. And for whatever reason, I don't see you Portlanders showing off a lot of big-deal Italian racing bikes. I could bring my Grandis as the unrestored, unmodified counterpart.

EDIT: with the firm date now, I can say firmly that I will be there, and the Heroic Classic & Vintage Ride noted below sounds like just my morning cup of tea.

I need to go down there and get my old junker Bianchi outta Gugie's shop before he donates it to Goodwill. I'll talk to Jeff about car pooling when it's closer to the date.

I'd like to come, but it definitely depends on the date. Last minute is tough for me.

Looks like the Show & Shine will be either Sun 6/12 or Sat 6/18, in the afternoon.. I'll get the date nailed down soon.

I met a guy with a stunning Klein Attitude who will bring some MTBs.

I'll probably bring Miss Molly 1972 all original (except tire's, brake pads, cables) Raleigh Twenty. I'm not changing a thing. I like my Univega 10 speed, but it has new rims/spokes laced to original hubs. I guess I could bring it too.

I'll likely be doing Helvetia Half Marathon on the 11th, so I vote for the 18th. The Saturday after that is Petal Pedal.

Date nailed down! Sunday June 12 from 2 to 5 pm for the Show & Shine at Velocult.

S H I F T to bikes!

The blurb says bring one bike, but there isn't a problem with bringing a couple.

Great.

I'll try to make it to the BBQ on Saturday.

I do have a lot of troubles riding two bikes at a time, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Do you wish to add a Sunday AM ride/cruise?

Oh, Mid June is always a bit tough to work around the hay schedule, and I won't know for sure until the time comes.

I'm in for this. Unless I carpool with Stuart/Tim I'll bring a couple bikes. I'm assuming we'll ride the same day, or the day before? I'm wondering when I/we should plan on getting into town.

Hey DD Tim Stuart: I can bunk a few out of town BFCV'ers, as long as you're not expecting fancy.

I've put that weekend on the family calendar as "Bike Geeks Bed Here."

You're welcome to show up Friday eve or Sat, and stay the weekend. Just let me know.

Hey everybody! Back on the boards after a few year hiatus thanks to the prompting of JYL. I will be attending the Show & Shine and doing the ride previous to the show, and very much looking forward to it! See you all there.

I put the ride on the Pedalpalooza calendar. 8:30 am Sunday June 12, to allow people to finish the ride and get to the Show & Shine.

S H I F T to bikes!

"HEROIC CLASSIC & VINTAGE RIDE Link
Velocult parking lot, 1969 NE 42nd Avenue Take Trimet
8:30am - 12:30pm, We leave punctually.
We will ride classic and vintage bicycles, heroically, on a demanding route of 30+ miles. There will be stiff climbs, twisty descents, and 10+ miles of dirt and gravel trails.* We will get dirty and sweaty, maybe muddy. Riding in the spirit of the greats, Coppi, Mercx, Hinault, we will suffer, self-harm, prevail, and in the end slake our thirst and cleanse our wounds with recovery beverage aka beer. Ends at Velocult for the C&V Show & Shine.
* Trails rideable on 23 mm road tires. For experienced riders."

It won't be the usual Pedalpalooza slow-ride-in-costume so hopefully the somewhat overwrought description will wave away those who are expecting to ride naked on a Dutch bike.

Route not settled but I do want to do the whole Leif Erickson trail, which we didn't do last Sunday, Germantown and Newberry, that we also skipped, and maybe we'll also come back up Saltzman Road back into the woods.

At the risk of showing my confusion, is that bit about the Heroic ride something other that what we'll be planning on doing or is it the C&V ride for this event?

I'm not at all sure my back's going to be up to that kind of riding by the time of Cino in September, much less midway through June. Regardless, I'll be down with a bike to show.

I was thinking of going out for a mellow ride on Saturday, stopping at a store to get some meat, and cooking/eating it at Grilled By Bike, which starts at 2 pm in Irving Park.

There will be bikes and rides everywhere that weekend, it's the start of Pedalpalooza. S H I F T to bikes!

For example, there's an 11:30 am ride/class on Ride Leadership that I kind of want to/should go on.
