Giant ATX 760, bottom bracket is smoked

Hey guys, long time lurker. I was a lot active a few years ago when I used to bike a lot more often, cars basically took over my life and I'd love to hop on the back of my cycle.

I have a 1996 Giant ATX 760, and I need a bottom bracket, bearing assembly, whatever you'd like to refer to it as. Obviously I need to replace the unit, can anyone point me in a direction? I have a newer set of Shimano Cranks that I put on after my old ones bit the dust.

Thanks guys! Please consider my ignorance, its been awhile. I can provide any specifics, measurements, etc if needed.

Yes, all specs will be needed. Photos help a lot to filter out the initial nonsense. Andy

I think you could just remove the old one and match it.

You have to match the new cranks.
Spindle length may be different or not.
What model # are the new cranks?

The OP said the crank has been changed (to a new set of Shimano, which could mean still Square Taper, or HT1, or HT2), so what was originally fitted may not have any relevance to what is currently fitted.

We need the OP to come back with details of what is fitted today, not when it left the factory.

Good point, although he doesn't say that the BB has ever been changed from original

Which is why I gave the possibilities that it could be. We have no info on when this was done, pre 1999, probably still square taper, post 1999 (first year of HT1), HT1 then HT2 became standard, as an HT2 comes with a BB included, it's often the best/most cost effective way to go when upgrading a crank.

Like I also said, more info is needed from the OP with exactly what is fitted today.

None of the reply's (less #AnkleWork) are really any use (and then that seems to have been too obvious) without the detailed info from the OP as to what is currently on the bike (which most of us, including you have asked for), till we know that, it's all guess work, with a little knowledge from what was available during the time frame given.

You cannot assume bikepedia is correct. It lists a different crank than what came on my Globe.

Which is why besides the specs (as actually on the bike) photos are a good confirmation or corrective data. Again the short replies ring true. Andy

and it is indeed INCORRECT.

I bought a 68x113 Shimano UN300 BB based on that bikepdia post/above poster's response, and can confirm it is a 73x113... granted it's now 2024, but the info still holds. My ATX 760's BB was also "smoked". Can't wait to put this frame back together. It was a $40 (Correction, I overpaid at $60) buy from an unhoused person and should last another 2 decades with a new BB/chain/derailleurs. Super stoked. Thanks to the OP, who was apparently also smoked? this thread was a wild ride; I hope the unhoused person I bought it from got to spend the $ on helping himself.

So you buy a stolen bike for $40 just so you can revive an 8 year old thread?

That's a nice looking high horse. The BB was destroyed, he didn't want to ride it anymore. The gent was living in a trailer with his partner and he fixes bikes for fellow neighbors. He wasn't able to sell the bike, and it was (probably going to the dumpster). I overpaid him $60 for it, and after I fix it with new parts bought with $ from my own pocket, I'm either going to donate back to the local bike kitchen, where they provide bikes to the unhoused, or donate it to a local women's shelter (the frame is rather small.) Rinse and repeat.

Also, I only have 4 posts on this forum, feel free to put me on the ignore list. Hopefully the next AT760/770 owner can get the correctly sized BB. Have a blessed day.
