Cavendish claimed he took a wrong line and got boxed in, otherwise he would have won because in his own words, "I was faster." Watching the finish replay overhead I don't think Cavendish was faster. It was an slight uphill sprint which would have given the advantage to Sagan anyway. You don't lose a big sprint like this and blame it on the wheel you chose. 65% of winning a sprint is being in the right position and timing the right move, the other 45% is speed. If you make the wrong choice man up and simply say Peter was the best sprinter today instead of implying he was lucky because I was faster. I don't think Cavendish's comments would have bothered me that much if he hadn't had looked back at Matthews and raised his hand at him in disgust as if Matthews had no right to be there. But nothing new. Cavendish is usually bitter when he loses.

Great title defense by Sagan! I bet his new team is happy he'll be bringing the rainbow stripes over to their camp next year.

Abysmal spectator turnout, though. People criticized the organizers in Richmond for pre-race estimates of like 650,000 spectators, but realistically we had at least 150,000 around the course last year, maybe up to 200,000, and it was LOUD. Yesterday there were probably 1-2,000 people on the finishing straight and that was about it. They really didn't even need to bother with the fencing along the course.

Yeah it was clear the UCI just wanted $$$. Look at the DNF list 140 compared to only 53 riders who finished. Most dropped because of dehydration. UCI the new FIFA.

Dehydration is not the reason there were fewer finishers. The wind is, it split the peloton and then the race officials pull riders who are too far behind so they don't have lapped traffic. They pulled everyone except the lead group and the first chase group.

So, I guess the elite men's group are not susceptible to heat like all the others. And yes dehydration may not have been the right word to use. But heat certainly had to have been a major factor why so many were far behind the cutoff time. Even Peter said: We finished a lot of bottles today, I was always putting water on me, but you were able to stay cooler on the wheels. It was easier if you didn't have to work. But in the end I don't think anybody had too much energy left. Everybody suffered in the heat."

Over 140 DNF is not because of wind? Are you saying the world's field has never been split before from wind??? Tell me the last World's where so many dropped out because of a split.

If i'm a pro in that peleton and i see zero spectators on the course and it's 100 degrees on the pavement and I'm stuck at the bad end of a split i'm folding. That is the UCI's fault. This was about greed, plain and simple.

It was a bad location and I think high risk. I'm happy there were no other issues.

Sagan continues to amaze. Just like last year you really didn't hear his name mentioned until the sprint. Cav is a great winner but when he loses not so much.
I agree that holding the worlds in those conditions is inexcusable. Cookson should be driven 25 miles out into the desert and made to walk back with, lets be merciful, 1 bottle of water.

Agreed - for what it's worth, they may have done too much work in the early stages. When the split came, one of the two riders who were in the right position (Geraint Evans) had two punctures in quick succession at a time when the crosswinds were creating havoc and couldn't get back on, while Luke Rowe punctured soon after while in the leading group and ditto.

But all credit to Sagan - one of the current greats who can climb all but the high mountains, jump in a breakaway and keep going and sprint better than all but a handful of the out and out sprinters

If that is the case I stand corrected - give him two bottles Seriously though I can't see how this was considered a good choice. Not only the heat but the boring terrain as well. BTW considering the pristine conditions of the roads didn't it seem odd that there were so many punctures.
