Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

opinion on potential bike purchase?

Hi. Is it kosher to ask for opinions on a potential purchase (modern/carbon bike) in this forum?

Well, I will give it a shot....

I have the opportunity to purchase a Giant Defy Advanced Pro 0 with Dura Ace group set. Its a 2016, all stock. Hardly used. The price is $2700.
This will be my first carbon/modern bike. I have a fleet of vintage steel bikes. Ask me about vintage steel rides, I know values. I do my own wrenching and consider myself fairly knowledgeable about bikes in general. Values of carbon bikes, not so knowledgeable.
Ebay sales are all over the boards. Does $2700 sound right? Thanks.

yeah, sounds like it, um, "fell off the back of the truck."

Considering the 2016 blue-books for more than that.. It's a good deal.. Now... whether the frame is counterfeit, the whole thing is stolen, there's a terrible crack under the paint.. who knows..

Used bike prices can be quite low, even with almost no miles. If someone"s motivation to sell is high enough a low price is the way to do it.

Hopefully the motivation isn't for one of the aforementioned reasons.

It's a very low price. Could be shady or it could be a reasonably well-off person that bought the bike, didn't take to road cycling as much as they thought they might and is now selling at half price assuming steep, but not terribly uncommon, depreciation of used goods.

That is a GREAT bike for a GREAT price. I would grab it assuming it's all in good order.

I will not defy this person, name nonwithstanding ....

If you know and trust the seller, Jump On It. If you are sure it is what it purports to be, Grab It (assuming it fits of course ... and even if it doesn't. You could resell it for $3500 easily.)

If there is anything even slightly sketchy about any of it .... But I assume this is a rich dentist's bike which he realized he didn't want (entry level bike for a rich guy) so he is dumping it because he doesn't care.

If that is the case ... buy it and post pics.

Seller says he has receipt. Back story makes sense; injury (non bike related) is preventing him from riding.....

I think the Seller over-bought and probably doesn't use the bike. He said he has a joint issue that prevents comfortable riding. Whatever.....if its clean, I will likely buy. I will be going to check out the bike closely this weekend. thanks

If this is a CL listing or similar, I'd make a point of getting out there today. If legit, it's a good deal that probably won't last long.

Jump on that deal, it's crazy good.

I'm hopefully getting a similar deal on a 2016 Cannondale Supersix Evo Hi-Mod Dura Ace 2 (damn that's a long name haha) and am super excited about it.

No. Common practice in this forum is to make the purchase first and then ask afterwards if it was a good deal.

In my experience -- assuming Craigslist -- if it's a great, legit deal, the bike will be gone. Even if I made arrangements to pick it up the same day and was assured by the seller that we had a deal. Good luck.

Ask questions about the bike, what shop he got it from, reciept, etc? Check if the components match the Giant stock components, if not ask why (swapped for fit, etc). The purpose here is establishing trust-worthy-ness of the seller.

To a large extent any specific answer doesn't matter.
You're basically trying to make sure the bike:
1) Is legit (not counter-feit or stolen).
2) Has not had a significant crash.

Prices on recent used bikes are all over the map. There does tend to be a significant drop since not everyone is willing/able to come up with ~$3k cash for a CL purchase.

All depends on location. Could be a screaming deal here like that, but if it's over a few hundred bucks, not that many, if any, are going to jump. Pure impatience would make me wanna get out there though!

Went and looked at this bike today. Its the real-deal. Legit seller with all the paper work. I looked it over best I know how. It would be my first carbon/modern bike. (check my signature line of current bikes). The bike appears un-used; you just cannot clean a bike that much. Not a bit of sand/dirt anywhere. Even handlebar tape and seat (stock) look un-used.
So, I plan to buy it. I just am putting funds together. I told the seller up-front that I wanted to take a look first; explained I am not wasting his time etc.
The one thing that bothers me is the "why are you selling". When someone says "cus' I just don't use it." Makes you wonder, how do you get into such a pricey purchase not use it?
