SRAM eTap (11-sp) w/ Ultegra 10-sp crank/chainrings?

I have a bike with a 2010 Shimano Ultegra 6700 groupset. Would love to change it to current SRAM Red eTap shifters & deraillers. Also would upgrade my wheel to 11-sp obviously, but I'd love to not have to replace my cranks/chainrings if possible. I know SRAM recommends only using current SRAM cranks/chainrings (Red 22, Force 22, or Rival 22) w/ eTap, but I'm wondering how mandatory that recommendation is.

So, will 10-sp Ultegra 6700 cranks/chainrings work w/ 11-sp Red eTap, or am I asking for trouble?

Thanks.

I have not seen that combo in practice, but I have seen a few 10-speed front / 11-speed rear setups work fine.

The only way you will know for sure is to give it a try. My guess is it will be fine.

I just changed to 11 speed Ultegra on an old 9 speed Dura Ace crank set and front derailleur. Surfed the net, asked forums and got a couple of negative replies but no real good information. After the change, everything works perfect, in fact I did not even have to change the front derailleur adjustment, it worked just as well as before the upgrade.

fwiw, I reached out to a couple of reputable bike shops in the area and asked this same question, and both shops told me that the spacing between the large & small chainrings is different on SRAM 11-sp "22" series cranks than it is on any Shimano 10-sp cranks...so while it might still work, it will not work optimally.

There's that nice little 10th click to send your chain into the spokes too! Should be fun.

I have a 10speed SRAM/Quarq crankset on an 11speed Ultegra bike. Never had an issue. I realize that the set up is opposite of what you're proposing, but it's also the same.

This "upgrade" makes no sense. There's no point in splurging on etap brifters if you don't have a compatible crankset and cassette.

What is the purpose of this "upgrade?" Do your current brifters no longer work? If so, get replacement 6700 brifters.

Do you want a cool new toy? Save a little longer and get the appropriate crankset and cassette. Upgrade the rear wheel if you have to.

You've got two problems if you try this partial upgrade: crappy front shifting and the danger of shifting into your spokes in the back. Now you've wasted money for a downgrade in shift quality and the danger of wrecking some components with an errant rear shift. All in order to try to be the cool kid on the block with coin you don't have.
