Look At My Legs
Today I was chatting with a woman, telling me about her husband's cycling hobby. After she spoke for a bit I told her I understood how he could enjoy cycling so much as my wife and I have been cycling for over 20 years, roadies, tandem and single bikes. As soon as I said that, she looked down at my legs. I was wearing short pants.
Is it the same for you? If you mention that you cycle, the person will look down at your legs?

In my neighborhood, when I mention that I'm a cyclist, everyone looks at me kind of strange and wants to know why I do something so strenuous. Then the conversation turns to golf, whatever that is.
You should see the looks and hear the comments when I tell then how much my bikes cost.

I posted this in another thread:
Check out the Velo Museum in Nijmegem. We found it looking for a bike shop
I had a pretty funny incident there, and it made my day. My wife and I were still in our bike clothes as we toured through the museum. As I passed a pretty young woman she said in English, "you have really nice legs." When I said "thank you" in English she got all embarrassed and flustered. I thought my wife, who was just around the corner, was going to split a gut because she was laughing so hard. My wife still kids me about it, but also agrees

Non cyclists who look at my legs are frequently disappointed. They expect someone who rides distances impossible for them (they think) to have the legs of a bodybuilder.

People look at my legs and comment about how they just developed a hankering for a bucket of the Colonel's Finest.

People look at my legs even when I don't mention cycling. Some of us have it. Some of you don't.

Yep, chicken legs is a frequent description for my legs, to which I usually reply, "Well, they get me everywhere I want to go. Care to join me on a ride or walk?" They refuse the offer because 1) they know me and realise that they couldn't keep up and 2) they also realise what a stupid comment they just made. The bottom line is that the new norm is an inch or two of insulation around most extremities. Anything less is seen as an oddity.

It's ridiculous. I look at things like bowling and spending 40 hours a week watching sports on tv as mildly insane and stupid. Tell someone you ride a bike you might as well have just told them you're going to the moon.
God forbid I don't want to be a fat ass who wheezes between the couch and TV.
A proper response to anything perceived as a slight against lycra should be: "Do you watch football? Oh, yeah, the sport where a bunch of guys in tights run around and slap each other on the butt between plays!"
Also, the leg thing.......if it's a ****** bro gym rat with built legs nobody seems to care if they're shaved. And that guy is only doing it to show off. Not because he might have to scrape dirt out of his road rash.

I know right? Riding with like minded people, who probably won't look at your legs, for fun and pleasure sharing the camaraderie of a beautiful shared activity. Stopping somewhere for coffee and snacks while experiencing the great doors? Sounds icky, plus they could probably not keep up you either, what with your amazing legs that make women swoon.
