Not A Bad Start. Happy Anniversary
May 9th,2017.
My 64 year old body needed more than the dieting and some exercising I was doing. So I dragged my 1974 Mercian out of the shed, pumped up the tires (yea they actually were OK), went across the street to the cemetery which has a half mile loop and did 3 miles. Thought I was going to cough up a lung. Now ,when I had hair and a flat belly (late 20's), I was quite the cyclist doing centuries and hanging with the big boys. So this was a very humbling experience but it was a start...FAST FORWARD......
MAY 9th, 2018.
2,016 miles logged, 130,000 calories burned, 3 bikes in the stable PLUS the same wife! Solid B rider now with lots of 35 mile plus group ride done. 40 lbs lost and 20 more to go. Bunch of Metric centuries planned this summer and maybe a real 100 later this year.
Anyway, that's my story so far and I wanted to post to thank those further along for their sharing their expertise and insperation. For those that just started this wonderful sport. RIDE ON!!! There is nothing like the joy of two wheels and the satisfaction of steady improvement.

Good job! 
I occasionally ride with gents in their 70s - that's the nice thing about this sport, there's no real reason to quit as you get older.

Awesome! I'd like to do this but trying to work out the reality of 3 new bikes and the same wife in one year!

Congratulations. My personal anniversary of serious bike riding is Aug 2nd, 2015. Or probably before that, but Aug. 2 is when I first started logging my rides using a cycling app. 3 miles at an average speed of 9 MPH on my old mountain bike. Weight then was around 280. Now nearly 3 years later, I ride 10 miles most mornings, on the weekends it's nothing for me to do a 20-40 mile ride, or even a half century. Achieved a metric and then a full century last year. Weight is down to 228 as of this morning, and still working on losing. And of course with a much better bike that actually fits, it's much easier to ride and I can go a lot faster. Of course I'm also a bit better conditioned now than when I first dragged my butt off the couch.
Best thing is that my son loves going on rides around town with me. I can't wait until he gets a bit older and is able to go on long rides with me. Also can't wait to get my daughter off training wheels.

Just to clarify one old bike, my 1970's Mecian which is due the restoration it deserves and only two new bikes...same wife though who never gets old!!!

While I've ridden at least some most years since I was a kid, I consider my serious cycling to have begun around 9 years ago, when I was 56. Somehow, against all logic and the experience of almost everyone else, I seem to have actually gained a few pounds since then
