Your Weekend (or Week's) Rides -- August 18/19

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We didn't do a whole lot last weekend because I was feeling under the weather.

During the week we walked.

But this weekend, we started to get active again ...

Saturday -- The day was supposed to be rather miserable, but the afternoon turned out to be quite nice so we went to the beach. Rowan walked. I ran then walked.

Saturday - Today was Tange Prestige day, both bikes being made with it.

First I took out the PDG Series Paramount for 31 miles. The morning was nice and cool. Last night's little rain helped clear the air. Still not the crystal clear we are used to but right now a lot of the smoke is gone.

This one always get's me lots of thumbs up from passing cars and cyclist.
You can finally see the mountains clearly again

This is why so much of the west is on fire, so dry this year.

Ready to cut

Then I took out the bike I picked up last weekend for a 10 mile test ride . A now sweet looking Davidson Impulse. This one took a lot of time and work to get sorted out. It was really filthy, missing a front wheel, rusted chain, frozen components, etc. Today it felt and worked like a brand new bike under me.

At the end of the ride

Nothing yesterday or Friday because the AC in the house broke during the week and I had it fixed yesterday. Wasn't going to go out for a hot sweaty ride and continue to sweat for an hour post-shower in a hot house, so the bike (and legs) got a few days of rest. Rain predicted today, so back on the wagon tomorrow.

Sunday - Back out on the Davidson for 40 miles today. I wanted to get a true feel for the bike. What I discovered was that even on smaller and higher psi tires than I normally use it was still really comfortable. The weather was cool but it was surprisingly windy for so early in the day. Lots of smoke again in the air. The clear skies from yesterday were nothing but a memory today.

One shot from near the end of the ride.
Very physical construction project the last couple of weeks, so Saturday was a recovery day.

Sunday a basic longer loop- 78 miles, 4,800'. Didn't have much breakfast so ended up eating 2 pastries at the bakery stop.

Variable conditions, some hot, some fog, wind head & tail. Many roadkill deer.

Gravel weekend!

Saturday: Bike check ride on the gravel bike, with one gravel climb. 29.7 miles, 1,312'.

Sunday: Rode the first event of the first year of a new local gravel series - the Hokah Hilly Hundred (hundred km, not miles), plus to and from the route. 87.1 miles (67 miles for the event itself), 5,030'.

With 6 climbs, this one had a pretty typical Driftless elevation profile (with two hills that topped out over 15%).

22 miles Sunday afternoon/evening. First outdoor ride in two weeks, although I've used the indoor trainer. No energy, one of my slowest rides of the year on this familiar route, but it was good to get outside. My lack of heat conditioning this summer is making harder work of rides that are usually a bit easier. Might not get another chance to ride again for awhile, depending on outcome of thyroid procedure this week.

Saturday wasn't feeling well, plus there is the haze (it's like an annual event here in South East Asia, with Malaysia and Singapore generally being hit the worst), stayed in and did not ride. But then there was much-needed rain to help temporarily clean up the skies so tomorrow's weather turned out to be pretty nice.

Sunday, local group ride. This was a relatively fast-paced group, 140km with 1,600m elevation. I tried to keep up with the strong riders at the head of the group, but eventually got dropped somewhere before 90km... legs weren't up to it, both calve muscles were threatening to cramp (and eventually did on the final 30km). Had to resort to very light gearing and fast cadence to keep going. Currently not sure if the cramping was due to the hard effort or due to the new saddle position... had a bikefit recently where my fitter placed my saddle position way forward (I had forgotten about this until yesterday, that I tended to get cramps easily in this more forward position, which was why I had it way back before, which also led to other problems leading to the bikefit... lol).
Also, there was one rider with us, relatively new to the group, riding a mountain bike with a very small front ring and very wide range cassette. Big, fat knobby tires too. He's strong, managed to keep up with the guys just fine!

Tuesday did a short version of my Davis Is. evening ride for 26 miles. Sunday went on the Picnic Is. to Davis Is. route for 40 miles. Sunday the exertions of the week finally caught up with me and I slept in. Didn't feel too well either so I skipped the ride. Did some much needed yard work instead.
