sore arms

never really had a problem before but as I get older, I am 55, I find my arms become tired/sore after more than an hour or so. I ride the same comfort bike I have for years. I used to do 4 to 5 hour rides with minimal tiredness. I know I need some arm exercises but which ones would benefit me the most. I would like to build up my arm strength in the off season. the rest of me is fine

I do dumbells and the elliptical machine, really working the arms while on the elliptical.

I'm 57. I did a couple centuries on a comfort bike last year, and found that the high handlebars caused me some pain in the shoulders which tended to radiate down the arms. It might be a matter of position more than conditioning--can you try a different style of bike/handlebars?

Building up arm strength is probably always a good idea, but does strength have anything to do with being able to maintain arm position comfortably on a comfort bike?

Honest question--I'm just not getting the connection.

How about playing with handle bar height and reach?

As always I recommend seeing a fitter. It is wholly possible your position is off and even if you thought you found it comfortable before they might be able to help eek out more comfort or give you actual comfort. A lot of folks out there will tolerate a bad fit and say they were comfortable because it is hard to stay on a bike for so long and not at least claim comfort. I know there is a big backlash from some against fitters but after going to one and knowing a lot of folks who have had fittings done, I can say it is game changing. Yes you can faff about trying to get it right or you can see someone who does it for a living and they can usually help out quite a bit.

Certainly some arm exercises aren't a bad thing but a fit could be just what you need.

Is your saddle nose tilted down? That can cause you to slide forward and put more weight on your hands.
