Is it just me?

If I buy a tube of 4 oz (guessing here), I like to get my 4 oz from the tube. I call it getting my money's worth!

Actually I see no sense in tossing out the cream I could be using. I squeeze the heck out of the tube but it does not come out so I am cut the sucker open and take what is mine!

I end up getting a pretty decent amount that is stuck to the inside of the tube's walls. I use a good amount on long weekend rides but this little container or two does well for 10 or so midweek shorter rides. Rides that I don't really need much at all but if something makes your ride that much more comfy, why not!

I use A&D ointment. I haven't checked, but I'm guessing it's more economical.

I checked it out, first I didn't get the chamois creme amount correct as i was just going off the top of my head, it is actually 8 oz.

I get it for $13 or so.

The A&D searching online is $3.30 for 1.5 oz........it would take 5 containers to make 7.5 oz. I'll stick with the chamois creme.

Upgrade to Body Glide.

You will be glad you did.

Or continue to cut open purple tubes. Doesn't matter to me.

My bother does this with toothpaste tubes. It extends usage about a week for him. As for chamois crème, I make my own for a fraction of what one buys it for, plus it is formulated to last longer on a ride so I don't have to reapply 4 or 5 hours into a ride.

Growing up, we used to have a "Toothpaste Tube Key".
Just $2.95 for a Fendrihan

I determined after a ride or two that this stuff was totally unnessacary and just made a mess.

But, why don't you just use the edge of a counter or something to force everything on the walls toward the opening without having to resort to cutting it open? It's just like a tube of toothpaste...

I use Phil's waterproof grease that comes in tubes. You'd be surprised how much grease is left in the tube when it seems empty.

I myself have tried squeezing the contents out various ways. IMO, nothing like a tube of toothpaste. Thick plastic walls are not very compliant or flexible.

What's the recipe? Might be worth a try.

I'm guessing "unnecessary" has do with style and ride conditions. I've completed several centuries with 10,000 ft to 12,000 ft gain over the years so a little cream on a ride like this isn't even an issue or noticeable when you are covered in salt and sweat. I just use it on training rides (climbing 5,000-7,000 ft) and most other rides just because I can.

But sorry, I need to HTFU! There are a lot of mountain roads in So California.

20 mile climb will get you near 5,000 ft gain.

A huge +1 and 2 and 3. I love my Body Glide and Bike Glide (or Chamois Glide) I use that stuff all the time and wouldn't switch. Easy to put on, works really well and isn't tested on animals. I haven't yet scooped out the last little bits of the stuff from the bottom of the applicator and melted it back down to make a new one but I imagine you could.

It is nice to apply and run, I don't have to wash hands or anything like that because I don't have creamy goo on my hands!

Heh. That's the first thing that popped into my mind. I am pretty confident that @Doug64 doesn't use it "down there."

I cut mine the same way, and just put the cut tube in a ziploc bag so it doesn't dry out between uses. Lately I have been buying the 8 oz. plastic tub for $20 which is much easier to dig out the last bits. It was an accident, went to a different bike shop who didn't have tubes, so I tried the tub, and now it's what I buy.

Ah yes, that would work! I have used the tub in the past and didn't think about that. Though the tub I believe is the Euro style only that has that funny menthol feeling. Didn't make a difference to me but I have heard people complain about it. But hey, that would solve my problem!
