Shimano ST 5700 STI brifters compatible with 9 or 11 speed derailleurs?

Shimano 5700 is the last ten speed 105 drivetrain. Is it backwards of forward compatible? I know it must be used with a Shimano or Sram 10-speed cassette. What derailleurs can be mixed in?

9-speed shimano non-dyna sis MTB derailleurs. E.g., deore. (I ran this setup for a while so I could run an 11-36 cassette. Shifting was OK -- not great, just OK. Also the 11-36 was overkill. Also, I hated the 5700 shifters because they never shifted right even without mixing components.)

Ultegra 10-speed maybe? I think Lenard Zinn has a chart somewhere.

but NOT Tiagra 10-speed, different cable pull.

Got it! It will take all 10 speed except 4700 Tiagra 10 speed.

...or Deore 10 speed. With those exceptions (and DA 740X) completely backwards compatible down to 6 speed SIS.

sorry to resurrect this thread. I’m looking at this too. Are we saying any 10s STI (except Tiagra 4700) will work with rear 9 speed deore XT? Or Even 10s deore for that matter? Same actuation? That’s great if so.

Not 10-speed Deore as 10-speed Shimano mountain bike groups are a different pull ratio.

You can use:

Shimano 8, 9 and 10 speed road components.
Shimano 8 and 9 speed mountain components.

Shimano changed the pull ratio for 10-speed mountain shifting, but waited until 11-speed to change the pull ratio for road shifting.

The ST-5700 takes a RD with the 1.7 / 1 actuation ratio in the chart that was posted on your other thread. Post above, #6 is correct.

Need to check the specs of the 9 speed MTB RD that you are considering, many of the RD from the 9 speed era have lower published max low sprocket limits. Low sprockets were not as big back then, not needed since 3x was common. Not sure how much you can exceed the Shimano specs. Also, the specs for the MTB RD may have been based on the longer RD hanger of a MTB frame.

I believe all of the 8 and 9 speed Shimano mountain RD's had a published max rear cog of 34. However, Shimano's specs are generally conservative and a 36 would probably work. Just be sure that you don't bind in large-large or go slack in small-small.

Yes, 8 & 9 speed RDs were usually 32 or 34T max sprocket, published. Mentioned the possible limit since the current inquirer had a post from yesterday wanting a RD that could handle something larger than 36T.

He didn't give a max sprocket desired or what type of frame it was going on.
