Shimano 105 front derailleur triple
Vintage 2005 on a Fuji world. Are these generally problematic? I have made some progress, up shifting is not so stiff,
new cables and housing, cleaned and lubed the best I could without removing. Trim function does not work on middle
gear and it down shifts from large to small skipping mid.
Would I be better off going microshift bar ends?
Rear derailleur works perfect

The first thing to do with any Shimano STI shifter that is giving you trouble is to do the WD 40 flush and lube.

New housing would surely be better. Lubed and cleaned the housing without removing? Are you talking about the outside. I sure know of no way to effectively clean the inside of older used housing. I don't know if the housing is the problem, but it could surely be a part of it. Just my opinion, new cables and old housing is a short cut that usually costs more than it could ever save.

I added some punctuation to make my O.P. more clear, Yes New cable and housing, Carb cleaner followed by lube.
I had watched that utube how to and others like it. I will repeat the flush and lube, maybe carb cleaner is hard on plastic,
will get WD40 thanks

I have the same triple shifter that had the same symptoms as you describe. It seemed to improve if I played with cable length a little but mainly I found myself fussing with that shifter during my rides way too much. I was afraid I’d break something with the amount of shifting force it took.
That bike now sits unused in favor of a new bike that has a single chain ring and a wide spread rear cassette.

Got it now. I mounted a used FSA triple, my first ever triple, on a bike just last month. I am using a Sora triple FD and Sora triple shifter. I had to play with the cable tension and the limit screws quite a bit to get it to shift properly on all 3 rings. It was a bit frustrating. I know the last adjustments on the limit screws was the final thing that got it working properly, but the cable tension was an issue that had to be right before the limit screws could be set properly. I don't know the properties of carb cleaner, or the effect it would have, but I don't think I would have used that. The right side shifter, rear derailleur was hanging up on me. I flushed it a couple of times, with a couple hours in between, and that did the trick. Stick with it and you will probably get it working.
