Nice! No real need for power meters, but stoked to see that Speedplay lives on. No updates on Speedplay website though.

Looks like the new design may have addressed the complaints people had with speedplay. New pedal body to cleat redisgn, and needle bearings. They removed the grease ports completely as they say they will not need regular service. So no more wobble and no more maintenance.

Wahoo has them for sale on their site: https://www.wahoofitness.com/devices/pedals/speedplay

Looks like they did everything right. So much more simple. Left pedal has the word Wahoo oriented so you can read it when installed correctly. Only 2 type of cleats across the product line, which are also color coded. Had a great experience with wahoo customer service on my Tickr; they replaced an out of warranty unit for free. In the market for pedals now, probably will be the Chromoly version.

Why do you say that? Both heart rate and perceived exertion have been proven to be significantly flawed metrics for training. What else do you use?

I am but a humble (and quite slow) recreational cyclist, cycling mainly for exercise. Although a power meter may provide useful data regarding my lack of power, I would probably derive more enjoyment by spending a similar sum on some other component to tinker with.

Which is fair enough, but your OP didn't personalize it: it came across as more of a blanket statement.

Must have posted that after a roundabout theoretical discussion at work in which the passive voice was used throughout to avoid causing offence to any; I certainly had not meant that as a blanket statement applicable to all.

2. I wouldn't say "significantly flawed" at all. Training (especially training FTP) is one of the least demanding things you can do with a power meter. For training FTP you can absolutely do well without a power meter. There are other things that do require power data, but training FTP isn't really one of them.

1. I took it as *he* doesn't have a real need for a power meter.

Most of the standard FTP tests I've seen, including those on Zwift, require power meters. I know you can do it with heart rate, and I am familiar with them as well, but far too many outside factors affect heart rate for it to be a reliable metric. Plus, heart rate doesn't react fast enough to your effort to be useful for short intervals.

Training is one of the least demanding uses for a power meter. That's why riders can get along well with single-sided power meters -- accuracy and precision really don't matter much when all you're doing is using a power meter as if it were a HRM or stopwatch and speedometer. There are uses for power that do require accuracy and precision but training really isn't one of them.

People trained successfully for about 150 years without super structured interval training. Highly structured training is the recent result of power meter availability, they're not the raison d'etre for power meters.

If you're not concerned with the accuracy of a power meter then you're not using it right.
