Gitane honeycomb...took the plunge on classic French

I might regret this, but since I don’t have anything classic French...(I didn’t want to go Peugeot (unless it was a pearl Competition)); checked off the box with a honeycomb Gitane which intrigued me. Two posts on the CL/FB thread suckered me in...

...only the frame, crank/BB/stem and seatpost but I didn’t haggle at $60. At least I don't have to worry about threaded items.

I am certain it ain’t Reynolds 531, but looks like a pretty decent gas pipe frame...maybe a Vitus frame set of sorts. 1970s maybe?

I have felt the need for classic French sometimes. I have mostly kept those feelings in check for years now.

Have fun with the Gitane!

I have a french-made1990 MBK thing, a cyclo-cross/gravel bike thing I have been able to find nothing about.

IIRC this is what the Interclub became commencing in 1974

that year was the first for this transfer pattern

I was under the impression that the Honeycomb dropouts were made by Huret. But this dropout has the derailleur stop at a decidedly non Huret orientation.

It was Huret being smart and making a dropout that works with Huret, Campagnolo or even Simplex derailleurs. And I think it's an Interclub, going by the combination of the honeycomb dropouts with a Sugino Maxy crankset, which means the odds are pretty good it's metric gauge Reynolds 531 double-butted main tubes with decent but nameless forks and stays. Nice fork crown, too. I had one of these many years ago that came to me as a stripped frameset, and because it wasn't my size I sent it on. It's not too far from what the Tour de France sold in the U.S. became after Mel Pinto stopped importing them - 531 main frame, non-Reynolds forks and stays, no fishmouth end treatments.

It's a great buy for $60!

if you look closely you will see there are two stops;

one in the usual Huret four o'clock position and the other in the standard seven o'clock

the small half thickness tab which can be seen on the edge of the dropout in the photo is for a chainholder device -

None of the catalogs I looked at have the interclub with the honeycomb drops...? Curious, was it not imported to the US?

i tried looking at the catalogues archived at the Gitane USA site and unfortunately their examples for this time are domestic french ones which illustrate the Interclub model as still coming with cottered steel chainsets

I'm basing this on the one I had in my possession in the very late 90s. I'm sure verktyg can weigh in on this, as he is THE guy in all things Gitane, but these decals make me think 1974 and later, during the Gitane Pacific era. The Interclub got upgraded and the TdF got downgraded and they both became Tretubi bikes - though there are some TdFs (or are they European market Olympic/Super Olympic variants?) that came through with chromed rear ends and honeycomb dropouts and fishmouth stay and fork ends, but generally the IC and the TdF were differentiated by parts selection and color and - I think but am not certain - tire clearance and brake reach.

When you get it, DO check the seatpost diameter. If it's 26.4 mm, it's metric 531 double butted. My memory is that the French used the proper butted 1.0-.7-1.0 mm stuff rather than plain gauge for their tretubi bikes, unlike the Raleigh Super Course and Dawes Galaxy. Of course, we ARE talking about Gitane, and that day they might have just reached for the non-descript stuff - but I strongly suspect it's 531.

I will definitely do so. Sort of excited to see it. Wish it had the derailleurs and other parts, but I suspect they were Huret Allvit or something with some crappy brakes and a plastic saddle.

You'll be wanting Mafacs for sure. The beauty of those dropouts is you can upgrade to SunTour immediately!

I have a few possibilities there.

Mafac side pulls? Are those what came with them?

No, it would have been conventional Mafac Racers for the Interclub; the TdF came, at least for a while, with Mafac Competitions. The sidepulls came a little later, I think.

Lovely frame, I’ve never met a Gitane I didn’t like. My ‘75 Tour De L’Avenir had those same dropouts and is not dissimilar in other ways as well. Regardless I’m sure you’ll find it’s a beautiful rider, congrats. And it’s orange.
