trying to find some good fixed hubs...

I have had problems with stripping hubs, wearing the bearings out super fast etc etc etc. What hub would you guys suggest for overall durability? I work as a messenger around 40 hours a week. I have had a dura ace low flange track hub, Surly hub, some ****ty suzue hub, and a ****ty specialized hub that came with my langster... the suzue hub has lasted me the longest of all of them... I kind of want something with loose ball bearings so they can be regreased/replaced easily... any ideas???

I really want to go with some phil woods but i dont think i would like beating the hell out of really nice parts...

If I remember correctly the surly is more of a low flange hub so you will need to buy new spokes. Chances of finding hubs that will fit exactly are probably not that great.

I agree with dolface if you want a hub that will last Phil is way to go, I have not done anything to mine yet after about 2 years of use..

you should get new spokes anyway. i mean, if you're springing for phils, don't skimp on spokes...

also, yeah phils are nice, but they are nice cause they can take a beating, so beat em! parts are meant to be used!

If you're killing them as fast as you say, I'd get a pair of IRO's. They're cheap, the bearings are easily replaced, and, they're cheap. I work on a pair 50+ hours a week through Boston weather, along with at least 3-4 other guys I know. We're all still rolling fine.

Also, none of those hubs should be stripping if you have a properly mounted, high quality cog and lockring, and aren't futzing with your gearing. I find it hard to believe that you're such a monster that you can kill a Dura-Ace "really quick" just by riding. If you did, even a Phil isn't going to last you that long. Chances are you're doing something wrong (not doing routine maintenence, cleaning/greasing, maybe something in your riding style ((like a total disregard for your stuff, just plain 'ol abusing it)) or improperly installing these parts).

well on the specialized hub i put a cog on... and the lock ring didnt have quite enough room to get all of the way on the hub... i didnt think twice about it because the ring came with the bike... i went to skid on a hot day... with real sticky tires that came on the wheel the cog spun and the lockring didnt but it popped off the hub with the threads...

the surly hub i rode with through the winter... indiana gets some nasty ones with alot of salt everywhere... thats what took those bearings so quick...

the dura ace hub had alot of miles on it... it was on my bike when i got it... so the guy before me may have installed it wrong....

more or less im just looking for the most durable **** i can get...

Do a search on Level Components, there are several threads and a good handful of us who are using them. (some of us for more than a year now)

You can get Phil's rather cheap at worldclasscycles.com if you buy in pairs. I'll be doing that as soon as I get back from vacation (or call them up so they arrive when I get back).

can we make a sticky thread wherein someone posts the pros/cons of each hub please? wading through 10 threads about OMG OMG WHICH HUB IS BESTEST!!!?!?!? is getting tiresome. same goes for cranksets, handlebars and rims. when i started riding SS/fixed, i learned about parts and riding "technique" by trial and error, and by going to shops and asking the employees, and talking to people who were already riding fixed.

there's a whole world of information out there waiting for you to be social.

If you want, I'll send you a Kogswell rear hub for you to beat on.

Just looking for someone to testify about the durability of our hubs.
