Safety Check... NOT
Had just purchased… and I’m in the process of converting the Grande Dame of 70’s touring bikes, the Raleigh International, into the ultimate “City Sport Bike”. I had just put on a set of Alloy Dawes City Bars, added some pedals I had sitting around and, with one brake, went... very carefully for an 11 mile spin. About 2/3 the way I felt a sudden shift 😳. The moral of the story, check more than tires & brakes. BTW, the bike rides like a dream 😎

Must be the month for saddle failures:
I had the good fortune to be able to repair mine.

I see an MGB. I'm an idiot! Those seat rails attach right at the wrong spot. That could not have been good.
That Raleigh sure would look nice with a leather saddle.

Several, perhaps more than several, times I have gotten excited about a new find. More than once, I have failed to check everything carefully, sometimes missing component damage, and, horrors of horrors, frame and/or fork damage. These days, I take a breath before I stick my hand into the money pocket, and look carefully. Then, when I get the bike home, I do a thorough check, paying close attention to the details. Only then will I take the bike for a short ride, just to ensure that it tracks properly.
That said, on YouTube, I recently watched a short video about a "bait bike". I got a real kick out of it...

That failure looks like it could have been uncomfortable.
When I bring a bike home, I always take it for a spin at least around the block before I tear into it. No good reason, just so I can say I did. One bike, a 1970 Gazelle, I didn't get around to riding for probably 6 months. I knew it had a broken seat stay so I took it a little easier than normal.
The last bike I brought home, no brakes, loose headset, loose crank, dry hubs... Even I'm not that stupid. I am going to go through the bearings and get at least one brake to work and then maybe see what happens if the tires hold air. Oh... I'll start checking the saddles from now on.

I think the saddle and rear brake are in cahoots to keep you safe.

Still Chartreuse!
What a gorgeous color and condition! My International has long since lost its lovely paint color, but I have also turned it into a town or classic club bike. Mine is powder coated lime green, has Nitto north roads bars, a Brooks B66 and a Nexus 8 speed hub. I've owned it since new (1973), it has about 22K miles on it, and I dearly love it. It is a joy to ride. My biggest regret is not preserving the original paint.

I had one of those Avocet saddles once. Fortunately, it wore out on top before I experienced a catastrophic failure. Your Raleigh deserves a good English leather saddle.
