Carlton Seat Post Nut… Whitworth
I discovered the Carlton, seat post, nut found on my just purchased circa 1971 Raleigh International is neither SAE nor metric. I’m guessing this is true across the board on Carlton built bikes. The nut is a 1/4W, or 1/4 Whitworth and measures .525” or 13.34mm across the flats. HOWEVER, if I remember correctly, the threads are metric. Also it turns out(no pun intended) that the Brooks Saddle’s adjusting nut, found on, at least certain older Brooks Saddles is a 1/4W as well. Perhaps this explains why many of the those desirable Carlton seat post nuts may be rounded off. Yes an adjustable wrench may suffice, but really shouldn’t be used. Whitworth tools are a bit hard to come by, but check out mossmotors.com for Whitworth tools, and samstagsales.com for valuable Whitworth information and tools as well.

If the seat post bolt is 1/4" Whitworth and the Brooks saddle tension nut is 1/4" Whitworth, why not use the Brooks saddle wrench that comes in the box with the Brooks?

I had to get out the calipers and measure the dimension on my own bolt... I can't remember how I was adjusting this thing now. I think I may have been using the 14 mm version of one of those offset wrenches that has 12 points holding the corners only.
