bar end shifters

hi guys, and ladies. quick question. do bar end shifters require a certain bar inside diameter? i'm looking at an old raleigh grandprix with bar ends, 2 x 5 speed with drop bars and want to convert this to a riser bar wald 867. will the bar ends fit in this bar. its pretty much standard as far as i can tell. if not. are there shims made to adapt to this. thanks, joe

Some risers have the correct diameter for barcons but most don't..

IIRC Drop bars are 23.8 and and most flat bars are 22.2

Bar end shifters are designed for handlebars with a diameter of 23.8mm, slightly larger than most riser/city bars (22.2mm). That said, some handlebars with a big backsweep (so that the handlebars end up parallel to the top tube or nearly so) - like mustache bars - are 23.8mm and can accept bar end shifters.

Edit - the Wald 867 will not work with bar ends.

There are riser bars with the correct sizing for bar ends. One handlebar of that size I really like is the Velo-Orange Porteur bar, comes in both 22.2 and 23.8. It may not have enough rise for you as it is only 15mm. I believe the VO left bank bar comes in both sizes and it has a rise of 75mm. My issue with a lot of these types of bars are the width, too wide for me. The Porteur and the Left Bank keep the width narrower.

Be aware the you'll run into issues fitting upright style levers on many of these bars.

The outside diameter is irrelevant, it's the inside that matters. The tubing wall on steel handlebars is much thinner, making the ID larger. I've used bar end shifters with set of upright steel handlebars from an old Schwinn with no issues. I can't be a 100% certain that bar ends will work with the Wald bars, but I'd be very surprised if they didn't.
