Hi Folks. I found a hairline crack on the left seat stay of my Paketa tandem. Do any of you know of anyone who can repair a magnesium frame? Thanks.

Repair welding of Mg will be an extreme specialty. One of the only builders I know of that built with Mg was https://zinncycles.com/ , might try them?

Have you talked to Paketa to see if they'll repair the frame? Probably requiring a strip down for shipping.

You might contact Lennard Zinn, he might know of a specialty welder who can tig your crack since many of his bikes were built by Paketa. A good aluminum welder should be able to do it but you would be best off finding someone with the specific rod and skills/experience with Mg. However, I doubt very much it will be a framebuilder. More likely an aerospace welder.

There is a page at Precision Tandems. But, I didn't notice that it was an orphaned page.

You could still contact Precision Tandems and see if they had some suggestions.
Perhaps some of the Paketa owners/fabricators would still be around.
There are some people that do weld magnesium.
Perhaps in the auto industry or aerospace industry. Or... modifying or repairing old air cooled Volkswagen and Porsche engines and transmissions.
You could also contact some small frame builders. For example tiCycles in Portland. I think he is a small one-man shop, but he might enjoy trying something different.
