Issue mounting Sachs Huret Rival RD On '74 Motobecane Grand Jubilee
Hi folks - feeling kind of stupid here trying to mount this derailleur. As you can see in the pics, the dropout has a stop and it seems the derailleur has a tab designed to stop at that stop. But when I thread on the derailleur, it mounts tight, fixed and flush with the dropout, no pivoting at the upper pivot. I thought by the era of this derailleur, they had done away with the old system of using a nut to fix the derailleur far enough from the dropout for it to swing. Am I wrong? Missing a bushing or something? Just confused about something simple? Thanks for any help.

According to both Velobase and Disraeli, that RD appears to date from the mid-1980s (after Sachs' acquisition of Huret). Your RD may be designed for a Campagnolo-type RD hanger (7 o'clock notch) vice the older Huret-type (4 o'clock notch). I think Campagnolo-type hangers had become more-or-less the de facto standard by then; it's possible that Sachs-Huret may have decided it wasn't worth producing a version of their new RDs to support the older Huret-type hanger.
Perhaps some of our more knowledgeable commenters ( @verktyg, @JohnDThompson ) can help shed light here.

I am not sure about compatibily. I had a couple of derailleurs that are too tight when screwed to the end. I usually put a drop of Loctite on the threds and leave the derailleur screw loose a bit, half a turn maybe so it pivots freelly. The Loctite then locks the screw in place.

I'd try a thin washer but the RD may well be designed for a campy drop out in which case you will need to improvise a solution. There are threads on BF with potential solutions you can find.

The "Rival" derailleur was designed to mount on a Campagnolo-type dropout, while you are mounting it on a much older Huret dropout, with the pivot stop in a much different spot. I don't think that there is a straightforward way of resolving this; you'll have to use a different derailleur or fabricate something to move the pivot stop on the dropout from 4 o'clock to about 7 o'clock.

50+ years ago I was working on a Schwinn Super Sport with the Huret RD hanger. I wanted to replace the Schwinn/Huret RD with a Suntour VGT.
Solution I came up with was to machine an alloy adapter which would act as a washer but also would serve the purpose of moving the tab from 4 to 7 o’clock as has already been suggested here.

I suppose the other solution is to get an old school steel hanger and just attach the Sachs to that, no? Would at least be functional until I find a better way.

if you are adventurous, you can make one out of a thin washer

The Rival derailleur is based on Shimano derailleur design. It's possible that the dropout could be modified in the manner that Schwinn modified Huret dropouts to accommodate Shimano derailleurs, by cutting a notch 1 o'clock to about 3 o'clock:.
