Was there ever an FC-7700 compact?
I expect Shimano back then assumed that if you were riding Dura Ace you were strong enough to not need a compact crankset.
but time waits for no man and the hills are starting to feel steeper.
I would like to keep the look of my 7700 groupset.
but I don't think there was ever a compact FC-7700
is there a workaround or alternative to lower my small ring toothcount?.

They have a triple crankset in the 7700 generation, but no compact

I don't think there was a Dura Ace compact crank until the 7900 series; the 7800 series offered a triple.

There is a long cage 7700 rear derailleur if that helps. You can go bigger on the back. 7800 looked exactly the same but i don't know if there was a long cage version.
Or a triple.
Or a triple.

in fact it is my brother who was asking me.
I suggested a triple (I even have an Ultegra tripe complete groupset) but he is too proud to ride a triplel it seems.
Makes no sense to me but....

I'll admit that I simplified my question and phrased it in the first person, as a "Me" question.
in fact it is my brother who was asking me.

The answer (no) was already stated; I believe compact cranks came about during 10 speed, so the 7700 line would not have them. When I used to run Ultegra 6600 I went with a R600 or R700 compact crank. It was a technically non-series component but it matched well with the rest of the 6600 line.

I run 7400, 7700, 7800 cranks.
7400 and 7700, i run 47, 48, 49 big rings, 39 small. If you have a clamp on front derailleur, just move it down a bit. For braze on , get a front derailleur extender .
i run 28 or 30 cassettes, even 32 with a woolftooth rear der extender
7400 and 7700, 130 generic rings are easy to find and wont ruin the look

To maintain the look your best bet would be an Ultegra triple. My choice would be to forget the look and get a newer compact crankset by Shimano or FSA, and upgrade the bottom bracket to outboard.

Be aware that front derailleurs don't like jumps larger than 16 teeth, and the smallest chainring you can put on a 130mm BCD is 38t, and those are difficult to come by and as soon as the teeth or chain begin to wear a little the chain my start skating over the shims between the rings. And a 2.5 percent gain is negligible.

Stronglight makes a 38T inner chainring that is compatible with 7700. If you get them in silver, you have to get right up on top of it to see that it isn't a Shimano ring. The Stronglight 38T is also available in 7005 aluminum, which is a pretty hard alloy, and should last a long time. I have the 38T inner rings on both of my bikes with DA 7700 cranksets. It sounds silly but there is a very noticable difference between a 38T and a 39T when climbing.
