Gallery of fools - honorary mention
Guy buys a $5000 fondriest frame for his wife, hacks the seat tube for some unknown reason
![](https://i11.ebayimg.com/04/i/04/d3/4e/db_12_sb.JPG)
Puts Centaur on it, flips the stem, puts the bars at a ridiculous angle,
![](https://i6.ebayimg.com/03/i/04/d3/7e/fa_12_sb.JPG)
and then sells it on ebay for $3000

I guess the good lady decided not to take up cycling?

Christ, I'd never thought of that. It's a super-stiff carbon frame, and she insisted he fit a suspension seatpost to it!

Is it just me...or can anyone else see the bike crying in the pictures? ![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
I wonder if she found it handled to 'quickly' and was too 'uncomfortable' <-- stiff and requested a different bike...perhaps a upright hybird?![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
*sigh*

yes, that would be new yorkers for you, too much money and so little common sense....jackass, I hope next time he buys his wife a bike he takes her along to the shop...I also want to know what shop sold him that bike, so i can egg it tonight. But i see things like that in ny all the time, this weekend I saw an early 70's BMW 2002 that had iots wheel-wells hacked out so the owner could put bigger wheels on it...a travesty...

Funny thing about wider wheels/tires that the shops never tell ya - once you change from the stock offset - the distence from the tire centerline to the steering axis - you screw up the whole steering of the car. Plus, you put loads on the spindles that they were not designed to handle. Thats why you see hot rods on the side of the road with a wheel that fell off taking the brake and part of the spidle with it.

Ouch
but frame was still useable. Would just have to use some sort of quil type seat post. Id never pay 3k for it though. Maybe a grand with all the parts there. Then id use a dremel with a sanding drum to make it at least look better.Get some high quality thermal set eposy and hit it with a heat gun.
I doubt it will sell for 3k. And if the guy put a reserve on it for much more than 1k hes gona be stuck with his screw up.
Realy as is it might still work with the collor not likly though.

But, you are probably right. Most people do what looks cool, with no knowledge of suspension geometry.
PS. Offset is the distance from the wheel's hub mounting surface to the back edge of the wheel. The center of the tire to turn center at the ground plane is scrub radius.
I can forgive anyone for not knowing that. I can't forgive the amount of stoopidity is takes to hack up a bike like that.

The reason why offset and not backspacing is more universally accepted for wheel sizing, is offset takes wheel width out of the equation for purposes of comparison. As far as improving scrub radius and bump steer...these are terms that can't be given justice with random musings. Bump steer is typically aggravated by + tire and wheel sizing due to increase in unsprung weight for example...rarely improved.
Cheers,
George
