Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What are your cycling goals this season?

Writing down goals or telling friends about them help keep me motivated to achieve my goals. I re-read them regularly to ensure that I’m on track and don’t forget them.

I like using the “S.M.A.R.T.” method to define goals.

Specific - "Get in shape" is not specific but "loose 20 lbs this season" is specific.
Measurable – As in the example above, you must know when you have achieved it.
Attainable – Goals should stretch your abilities but must be attainable. Otherwise people tend to give up on goals that are too big.
Realistic - Winning Le Tour is not realistic for most, well not for me anyway.
Time Limited - Otherwise you can take forever to achieve it.

My Goals:
1. I will complete my 30 km commute to/from work in 45 minutes (avg. 40 km/hr) before Sept 2006
2. I will complete a double century before Sept 2006

Goals differ from one person to another. One may want to accumulate a certain mileage; some may want to be able to track stand while others may want to place a certain number of top 10 finishes

What are your goals this year? Post back here to let us know your progess and when you've completed them.

If you live in the northwest you'll have to wait for a wind-free day to try that - last week I was going NW on Bowness road at 28km/h with a headwind. I rode out to the inflatable soccer club near the water treatment plant and turned around. With the wind behind me I was averaging 45-46km/h and not breathing hard all the way back to the Crowchild stop light.

Mine is simple...dont' get dropped, as of yet I can't do that in the road races. So far the only luck I've ever had is in the cyclocross races.

1) Complete a ride longer than 32 miles (perhaps tomorrow or monday or tuesday, heh)

2) Complete a 50 mile ride

3) Complete a metric century

4) Complete a century

Keep in mind there is no true "season" here in San Diego...year-round riding is more than possible so these are goals I want to complete by the end of the year.

It's a round trip with a 90 hour time limit!! I hope it will be a good time. I must admit I'm a little apprehensive about the climbing.

That would be a dream come true for me!!!!!

Unfortunately I'm not fast enough for that. However, one year I would very much like to participate in the RAAM as a part of a team.

Yeah, I commute from Panorama Hills to the Foothills Industriial Park. I did the ride home in 52 minutes a couple weeks ago and will try another attemp this week. It looks like the weather will be nice accornding to the forcast.

Folks,
There are some pretty nice goals listed so far. Best wishes to achieving them.
