Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Artistic license. I'm also not quibbling about Johnny Lee Miller's "poor form" in The Flying Scotsman.

What about Dupree's form while he was leading the pack in "You, Me & Dupree"?

He was pedaling in his instep, all the while kicking butt and taking names

Reportedly, the stunt man really was doing 50+ in the long shot. That is not very far fetched; motor paced bicyclists can go a lot faster. The closeup is a well known technical error.

Are you sure you are a Hoosier? Great Movie, I've got it so stop by sometime and we'll toss it on the big screen. Also you can get it free by eating 5 boxes of Corn Flakes...

Did about 25 miles today, the temp hit 27 so the toes were a little cold at the end.

So how did they shoot the close up then? Had him tied to a rope behind the truck or something?

Ever draft a big truck?

Lots of dump trucks/semis/military vehicles around here, and in a draft it's not at all uncommon to hover around 50 for a little bit. Unsafe as all hell, but not impossible or all that hard...

John Howard might have something to say about that......although doing it behind a car on the highway is just as impressive...

Correct.

Cipollini and Scirea got a ticket on the autostrada for drafting a Smart at about 90kmh in 2004, IIRC.

And you'll notice the CPSC reflectors are still on the bike. Who says they're for Freds?

Unsafe as all hell but also one serious adrenaline rush.

I think in an ideal situation, like having some sort of a hill and a massive tt ring, drafting a semi at 60 would be doable for a short while.

I drafted a firetruck once when I was on an charity ride and it couldn't get around a bunch of cyclist in
front of it. Fortunately it wasn't in a hurry and just kind of hung out doing 30 mph or so. Boy, it never
felt so easy to go so fast!!!! it was AWESOME!

I would be more worried about side draft when they pass by me on the highway... Whoosh!

Notice that:
1. There are two closeups of his crankset while he is drafting the truck. He is in the big ring in the first (40mph) closeup, but in the small ring in the second (50mph) closeup.
2. In some of the frontal views (where you can see the actor's face), he is pedalling less than half as fast as he would need to go 60mph.
Still, I think this is one of the best scenes in the movie, and this is the best US-made bicycling movie ever.
