LX Deore V-Brakes on my Vision R44
Hello group. I spent the weekend overhauling my 1999 Vision R44 and
decided to start using it to commute to work on. I'm sorry to say that
this bike has been woefully under utilized for quite a while, ever since I
had to have the seat stays welded after a stress fracture problem... anyway
today was its "shake out" trip and it worked pretty well except for these
confounded brakes (as mentioned in the subject line). No matter how
much I try to adjust these things I cannot get them to stop squealing
and this is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. This has always been a problem
and it's way past time I get it taken care of.
I've had mechanics at the Coventry LBS try their hand at this too, and
the results were the same...
Would I be better off going to a different brake? Is it even possible?
I'm assuming straight pull canti's wouldn't work. Are LX's of this
vintage (original equipment) known for this and a different V-Brake
should be a better choice?
I've done all I can think of to rectify this. I've installed these KoolStop pads,
I've lightly sanded the faceof the pads as well as rims,
centered, tried different toe angles (many many many times) and this
bloody screaming won't stop. Any suggestions, comments on this matter?
thanks,

Are your LX brakes the ones with the parallel pad movement? I think those had problems because the linkages weren't solid enough to prevent squealing. Some cheaper brakes might actually work better.

I put Performance Forte V-brakes on my Tailwind and they work well and quietly. And cheaply.

Use the Cheap Pads!
I also have a '99 R-44 (which also has the cracked seat stays). I tried upgrading my pads to Kool Stops (the best in my opinion) and could never get them to stop squealing. The guy at the local shop told me to bring it in and he'd fix it. He tried all day with no luck. Then he installed some inexpensive pads and the noise stopped. He said he thought the polished rims on the Vision were causing the squeal. I just use plain old cheapies now and haven't had any problems.

Hey Arnold,
This might go down as the longest lag in message reply history but I just now saw this today. So what did you do about your cracked seat stays? Were you able to get them replaced? Also, when you say "cheapies", can you provide the actual product name, or maybe that's it
