Is this really even a surprise? I mean, if you ARE shocked, you must have never been inside the store. Urban Outfitters is usually the first to get on hipster trends / "urban" culture items (graffiti books and shirts with paint drips, for example).
It ain't Target, folks.
Let's look at a few other things they promote...
Indie Rock (there's an albums of the month section on the website)
Artists, especially graffiti / street inspired like Dalek
Ironic T-Shirts
Tight fitting pants, or atleast ones that aren't baggy
"Used" clothes that's been repackaged
80's cartoon stuff
etc.

See, this is how trend cycle works.
1. Freethinking individual knowingly or unknowingly does something different. Either no one notices or those that do, ridicule.
2. Hip dudes notice, copy and imitate. Trend is still underground but gaining momentum. Still ridiculed by some, accepted by others.
3. Hip dudes lesser hip friends and affiliates pick up on trend, corporate America first takes notice.
4. Corportate marketing and mainstreamization; what was once "different" is now everywhere and homogenous.
5. Trends downfall. Goes back to the dedicated few. Possible repitetion 10 years later.
So: 1) Bike messengers figure out that track bikes work great in downtown traffic. 2) Very hip dudes in the major metropolitans (NYC, LA, SF) begin noticing and start to add some fashion; at this point they're completely out of the ordinary with this look. 3) Hip dude's friends and those that notice and appreciate come by, take look. 4) Specialized makes the Langster city edition and all hell breaks out on BFSSFG. 5) Target sells track bikes, everyone sells their sweet matching Deep V/handlebar grip bike in disgust.

im fine with UO people getting into bikes just for the fashion, as long as they put on brakes and dont crash into me/cause accidents that give FG a bad name/ridicule other non-fixie bicyclists or ridicule fixie riders who dont have deep V's.

Is Urban outfitters really a cool store? I hear a lot about it but I've never actually been there. I don't go shopping very often.

most of their stuff is gahhhhbage but they have dope stuff on sale usually. i found the black dice book their for like $10 and got some sweet slip-ons for $20.
i dunno. you just have to tolerate the lameness of the place sometimes to strike a little gold. but it's hard to stay there for more than 5 minutes without rolling your eyes outta your head.

UO has some pretty sweet sales. I got a belt and a shirt for $11 one time. The consumer within me was pleased. And it's even more pleased that I just told you well I shop.
