Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just gave my nephew his first big kid bike. :D

Today was one hell of a great day. Having been out of town, my nephew was swinging by today to pick up his Christmas present from the crazy cycling uncle, a swanky new Trek Jet 12...

He immediately thought it was cool looking, but there was a little trepidation getting on the bike. After a little acclimation, though, he was ready to head outside. His mom and dad had already been working on the basics of pedaling, so he got off to an OK start. What's truly amazing is that within just a couple minutes he was cruising right along, steering around corners, etc. etc.

A few pics:

A little guiding to get started....

And then he was off.

Remember when a bike ride could make you THIS happy?

Uncle and nephew after the maiden voyage....

Bikes are cool.

No kidding!

Completely unknowingly, he's already got OCP style. Note the matching helmet. I swear he already had it!!

Incorrect.

Really..you can. Trust me. The one or two good days come on the heels of weeks of constant whining and temper tamtrums, constant messes, and piles of stink laden diapers. It's a blast I tell you.

Dr. Pete...great day. I was able to do the same to my nephew before I had a kid of my own to spoil with bikes.

What an uncle

My uncle gave my Indy race car style peddal car away
It was white with red and blue pinstriping and a number on. I don't remember the number.
I just remember loving that thing to death

You need kids. You get lots of these awesome moments to go along with all of the difficulties. Looks like you made a little guy pretty happy, and it worked on you as well.

I can just see it now, 23 years in the future:

Interviewer: How does it feel winning a gold medal in the Men's Olympic Road Race?

DrPete's Nephew: Words can't even begin to express how I feel, but I just want to give a call out to my Uncle, Pete, who bought me my first bike, when I was just a wee lad.

He already told me that my Motobecane MTB (still inbound from UPS) is cheap taiwanese crap.

What a sweetie-pie - and such a good uncle you are, Pete.

If we had a Bike Forums award for Excellent Uncles, you and BAH would win it.

Looks like you are ready for one yourself. My 5 year old has been eyeing the Trek KDR road bike for about 2 years. Very Cool.

Indeed I think he does. Do you hear the sound of crickets coming from his crib at night?

No worries. I named mine after Hampsten. Seriously...
