MTB Wheelset : Advice? Recs?

I have a Santa Cruz Blur with a heavy, cheap wheelset. Looking for recommendations on a good wheelset that won't break my bank. I can spend up to $500, and I want to do the LBS thing, not an online deal. I do two races a year, and I don't weigh much, so lighter is better. Had a CrossMax set a few years ago and loved it -- sold it with my old bike and appreciated it way more after it was gone.

Anyone have a good recommendation?

I'd look at Hope II with Mavic XM719.

I built these for under $500.. hope pro2, dt swiss xr 4.2d rims, dt butted spokes/alloy nips. I think they are about 1675g for the pair.

hmmm

American classic laced to dt swiss 4.2 d makes a good wheelset, they have bad customer service though.

Mine are similar, just with red hubs and black spokes. Very sturdy wheel, and reasonable weight at that.

American Classic are good light wheels that can be had for around 500. The bontrager race x lite are built by DT and are also really nice.

Personally I think that crossmaxes are great wheels but a bit overpriced.

I don't know anyone who uses them, but I have been intrigued by the easton XC one's

I've had very good luck with DT Swiss XR 4.1 rims. I recently got ceramic Mavic Crossmax XL (front) and Crossmax SL (rear) and would highly recommend them. I was able to get both wheels for $500-600 on closeout.
