How to use a mini u
Ok, this is not a thread about what mini u-lock to buy or a debate over where to use it (back wheel versus front).
MY question is this: I have an IRO Mark V 53cm and a Kryptonite Mini U-Lock and a set of deep v's so you have an idea of what my dimensions are. Is there a way to fit it around say your average stop stign sized post that it will go around the frame and the front wheel.
I feel like I am ******** but I can't seem to find a way to do that on the average sign post. Does anyone have a pic of how they do it?? I can't figure out how to do it and I feel stupid
I feel like i have tried many combos and positions but I can't seem to get it to work...

i have a tricky time with mine sometimes too...you could try locking the back wheel and seat tube together to the sign post...not sure if that will work with a deep v wheel...i usually end up locking the top tube...you could use a cable in addition to the u lock as well, good luck

I have a quick-release front wheel because of this. Or I carry a cable in addition when not in the mood to remove wheel.
If you have risers, (drops get blocked by the top tube) sometimes you can turn the wheel all the way around until it reaches the frame and lock it that way.

Yeah I realize the back wheel is more expensive, but it also takes more work to get off..... so for a quick lockup that is going to be out of my sight, i'd rather lock the front.
but i don't really want to debate about it....
I ride with drops so Ican't do the flip the qheel around trick....unless i put my risers back on...but I like the drops too much

Are you using a quick release on the front? If not I wouldn't worry about it. Anyone who is so inclined to steal your wheel and is carrying the tools to do it is going to go for the rear first. It only takes a couple more seconds to get a rear off, if that. If you are running a quick release front drop a few bones on a locking skewer.

But hey, since you seem to know of a vastly superior method of locking up with a mini U by all means enlighten us.

It's always worked for me. I'm not saying I'd leave my bike locked up like that for a week, but for a quick lock up it's your best bet. A friend lost her rear doing the front wheel & frame lock up.

i jam my thumbs up and back into the tubes. this way i can point my fingers straight out in front to split the wind and attain an even more aero profile, and the usual fixed gear - zen - connectedness feeling through the drivetrain is multiplied ten fold because my thumbs become one with the tubing.

i got a locking skewer up front, and i lock up with sheldons method. solid. all you have to worry about is someone hacking through your rear deep v.

Or someone that doesn't realize that you can't just take the frame and leave the wheel. They will seriously **** your wheel.

That sheldon method is fairly effective. it isn't too easy to get through a wheel, not at all. If you live in a big ass city don't leave it outdoors at all is my experience.
that dutret fellow gets a few compliments for being a ****** on the interwebs and not surprisingly he he comes down with Sheldon envy lolzer.
Give it up, it's hopeless. See, Sheldon = real, dutret = not.

On the vast majority of road bikes you can fit a mini-lock around both the frame and the rear wheel. This is the correct method of locking. If you can't and you really want to secure the rear wheel just buy a cable.

put the 'u' part around the frame side and the bar part by the rim. seems to often work better than the other way around. i ride deep v's and can mini u-lock to a stop sign in almost every case.
