Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OK... S-Works Owners?

So I'm looking really seriously at getting an '08 S-Works Tarmac SL, like tomorrow. I've heard bad things about the S-Works crankset, though. Since you can't really swap it out for anything (or if you can, the options are limited to that and the Cannondale cranks AFAIK), how good/bad are they?

Are they any better with different chainrings?

Thanks!

My S-works Ruby (WSD Roubaix) threw its chain non stop.

FSA chainrings (courtesy of my LBS) fixed the problem.

It's VERY easy to use a different crankset. I'm doing it myself on an 07 SL. Just have your shop call up Specialized (they don't have it on thier dealer website) and ask them to send out a bb30 adaptor. It's just a little sleeve that you put into the frame. You don't even have to press it in... it just slips in there. Then you can run whatever crank you want. Just be aware, it is Italian threaded (they first made them for Quickstep, who runs Campy of course).

Another option would be to run the SRAM red BB30 crankset, which is out now. Or you can wait a couple months and there will be a handful of FSA cranks out in BB30 as well.

BTW, if you get a specialied crankset that has 175mm arms and want to get rid of it... PM me. I had a 172.5 and always run 175mm cranks.... that's why I ditched mine.

I told you don't have to use the dumb S-Works Crankset with that bike...

I have a campy record on mine with no issues. If you buy the module there may be an issue but I don't know?

Module is BB30. So if you don't want to use a BB30 crankset you have to get teh adaptor from specialized. It costs like $12. Then you can put whatever you want on it.

Unless Boonen's bike has some custom BB construction, it can be done.

The crank is fine but the chain rings are rubbish. The problem will be solved if you switch out the chain rings for other ones.

I didn't really have any problems with mine, except the shifting in combination with the Red FD. Anyway, they are BB30 and there are a lot of BB30 cranks coming out. Also, I just got an adapter for mine so that I could put an Italian threaded GXP BB for my S900 CinQo crank. I think most of the problems were with the '07 version. I definitely get better shifting performance with the SRAM rings though.

I think Campy has BB30 adapter cups for UT in 2009. On their website there is some sort of cryptic reference to a part number for cups meant for "oversized bottom brackets."

Matt... It comes in 2 versions. Boonen's bike has the standard (Italian or English) BB cups. The module (or complete bike, as I'm probably buying) has a completely different BB.

Anyways, now that I know I can either swap chainrings or put on a SRAM Red crank, I'm going for it.

Ack. My bad. Either way, you can still put a different crank on it, I guess it's just a preference in BB's.
