Help ID vintage Breezer-style mountan bike

Hey guys
We recently purchased this bike

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...lenotsupported
<https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120366754866&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&viewitem=&salenotsupported>

or eBay # 120366754866
and have been trying to figure out who may have made it.
Most of the parts date it in the 1983-1985 era (XT deer head rear
derailleur, AT crank, Suntour retrofriction levers, nutted sealed
hubs, XC II pedals) except for the Deore XT U brake from 1987+.
The cable routing is kinda weird. There is a cable stop on the
cross piece of the laterals but also a threaded stop in the seat
tube. We stripped some paint off of the stays and laterals and
there does not appear to be any evidence of a prior brake. If it
had been upgraded with a later U brake mount, there should have
been evidence of prior brakes. Could have been a drum brake but
their is no evidence of cable guides any where on the frame plus
the unused stop on the seat tube would have been weird. Possibly
could have been a Suntour Roller Cam brake which was later changed
but there are still dual cable stops.

The current paint looks to be rattle-can yellow and there is no
evidence of previous paint or decals under the yellow. The
serial number (C**T) might be a good indicator of the builder?
Fillets are decent and the tubing has a decent "ping" to it.
Drop outs are Shimano LF.
Any ideas you might have would be greatly appreciated! or even
suggestions of another person to try. I can take additional
photos if there is something that you need to see.

Thanks for your help

Oh, I was watching that auction.

Sorry, I can't help you. I have no idea what it is. But it is super-cool. I was sorely tempted to steal it from you.

I'd venture a guess based on the Non-PC stamping on the BB shell: Charlie Cunningham.
If it can be verified, I think you got a piece of history at a bargain price!
Edit, got his name right but it's a long shot since he built all his *known* bikes of aluminum...of course, somebody might have built it for him. He is credited with inventing the U-brake, IIRC.

Few more bits of information from today:
Rims, hubs, shifters, crank, front derailleur, brake levers, bottom bracket, pedals, headset all either date from 1983 and/or are date coded 1983.

Fork, rear derailleur, U brake, front brake are all circa 1986/87 by style and/or date code.

Peeling back the paint revealed a couple of interesting things. There are very faint marks that may have been cantilever mounts on the middle laterals. I haven't measured to see if they are in the right location but they are on both sides and look to be correct for cantilevers. There are also joints a couple of inches down the top tube and down tube. My guess is the head tube may have been from an existing frame and the joined to the tubes with internal sleeves? The head tube is sealed so we can't see inside the frame to confirm.

So, my guess is the bike was built in 1983 with a different fork and cantilever brakes on the rear. Sometime in late 1986, they switched the fork, rear derailleur, front brake and added U brake bosses. This was probably when the rattle-can yellow paint was added.

Comments, suggestions, ideas?
