Pre-owned Cycling clothes?
Let's say you found a good deal on a used cycling jersey:
Would you wear it?
How would you go about the de-funkification of another persons sweaty clothes?
P.S. I dont' even wanna think about used shorts!

Doubt it. Unless it was like a classic jersey from the old classic races. But, then I'd proudly wear a jersey Merckx once wore. I might run it thru a couple wash cycles first. Cycling shorts. Sounds sick. But, what if they were 300 dollar Rapha cycling gear. Maybe. But, I'd run them thru many, many, many wash cycles . Any obvious stains that can't be removed. 500 dollar shorts. Nah. Gross.

well, it depends on how much of a mysophobe you are.
or it depends on how good the deal is... $50 for used assos anyone?
just wash it in a regular cycle, add a little oxyclean if you want.
if it doesn't smell and doesn't have that odd stain, it's all good.

is it ironic that the OP asking this hypothetical question is dirty and unclean?

Would you drink out of a used water bottle, such as one tossed aside by the pros in a race? I picked up several on the tour of california course the other day...

As far as used jerseys... There are stores full of used clothing in virtually every city and town in the USA... and people use the clothing from there. I wouldn't go with used cycling shorts for the same reason I wouldn't go with used underwear, but I have several used jerseys.

This comes up every once in awhile, and I'm always surprised how squeamish some people are. It's an article of clothing worn by a human, like everything else in your closet. That's what they make washing machines for. I'd run it through the washer and never give it a thought. If I wore jerseys at all, I mean, which I don't. But if I did, I would.

^.. But, does not cycling produces an abnormal quantity of body fluids. As long as the stains come out. ..Once gave away cycling gear, I ordered on line. It did not fit ...Gave it to a person who looked like he could use some new bike duds... Definitely. No doubt it fit this person. Noticed he never wore them.. I only wore it once. It was Descente quality too.

I've never purchased second-hand cycling gear, but if I were in the market for some, and it was in my size, cheap, and clean, then yes, I'd pick it up. That said, I'd stay away from something intimate, such as shorts and socks.

i wouldn't. athletic gear is different from normal clothing. people sweat like pigs in cycling garb. my own stuff, even though i wash it in the machine, is never totally clean.

Banned.
A 25.00 long sleave Swobo wool jersey, you bet I will wear used. A 2.00 100% wool sweater to wear out in the woods int he winter on a mtb heck yes. A pir of almost brand new sidi road shoes. yes again. BUT I do draw the line at socks and shorts.

I would wear a used jacket/jersey/sweater without any hesitation. I buy army surplus, most of that is used.
I might even buy a pair of mid layer tights for cold weather. I wear my tights over my lycra shorts....hopefuly the other guy did to.
Lycra/chamois shorts?..no way! I wouldn't want some sort of fungal rash.
BTW, I thought of this as I was browsing eBay. I saw some good quality Jerseys going for less than $10.

www.theprosstuff.com sells used jerseys that are in good shape. I've bought a few from them and all were clean as any good washer can get a shirt clean.

I was glad when I won a bike-to-work raffle that I got a Sigg aluminum water jug (which has been appropriated by Mrs. Wirehead) instead of a used Tour de France jersey... that I'd probably feel compelled to brand a * to, depending on who it was...

I bought used jerseys from a friend. I worry more about germs on door handles than from washed clothes.
