Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bought a wool jersey

It's a Swobo 100% Merino jersey. $42. It doesn't smell at all after riding 30 miles in this oven known as Florida....apparently because bacteria won't form on the fibers. It doesn't itch, and it's cool even in these hot temps.

Anyone else wear these?

I have a Swobo and two Ibex. Love them all. The Swobo is a bit like wearing a dress when you're used to tighter, shorter jerseys, but I like it. Nothing wrong with wearing a dress...

I sweat a lot and can confirm that wool jerseys will not stink. It's awesome. I find ultralight high-end tech fabrics more cool and comfy on long, hard rides in the summer, but I'll wear wool if I'm not going to be out forever cooking in the sun.

Merino wool rocks and Swobo does it very well. I have 2 l/s, one s/s and a wool thin baselayer.

One of them I've never even washed once. It also great for days that start cold and get moderately warm later in the day.

They were all $42 a week ago, and now they jumped to $47 (except the medium cranberry...it's still cheaper). Still a great deal.

Bonktown has them from time to time for that price. Backcountry.com (that own Bonktown) will have them on sale for around 50 as well if you keep an eye out.

PS: My swobo jersey is by FAR my favorite piece of clothing, I'm kicking myself for not getting the merino tights on spring sale for when it gets colder again.

Even if you can't find it at $42, it still well worth the $90 or whatever.

For those of you who own these jerseys, do you feel that the Swobo sizing chart is accurate? I'm 5'10", 195 (target weight 170 - doh!), and I have a 43" inch chest. Does a large sound right?

I have a wool jersey as well and love way more then my 100% polyester jerseys. But I also have a couple of $80 or so 100% polyester jerseys and found that $12 (got some more on sale last week for $5) Walmart 100% polyester jerseys to work just as well and the $80 jobs. And since the Walmart jerseys are so cheap, it doesn't make sense anymore to buy more expensive jeresys...BUT, since wool doesn't stink as quickly when I start touring I'll be buying wool and wearing those while touring.

These are pretty tight jerseys. I imagine the large would be a very racey fit if that's what you want. But reviews suggest that if in doubt, go for the next size up.

I bought a medium and it fits great and not tight. But I pretty much look like this guy:

I have several wool jerseys/baselayers of various brands, shapes, sizes, colours, etc. I'm wearing one as a baselayer right now even though I'm not cycling.

Maybe when I get closer to my target weight. But I do appreciate the feedback!

Wool always takes the skin off my nipples on long rides. I only use mine in cooler weather with a base layer.

I have one that my dad passed on to me. It is really long, but it's one of my favorite jerseys.

This:

>wool jerseys will not stink<

And this:

>BUT, since wool doesn't stink as quickly<

So.......which is it? (According to my daughter, she can smell me well enough after a ride, without having to wonder about the jersey's odiferousness.)

After a ride everything is flesh, try a different deodorant. Let the wool base layer or jersey air dry between uses and there is no smell.

I only wear wool jerseys. I commute all week in just one. No smell at all, just white salt stains.
