Chasing Annie Londonderry

On an early summer day in June 1894, a young woman carrying only a change of clothes and a pearl-handled revolver climbed onto a Columbia bicycle before a crowd of 500 people on the steps of the Massachusetts State House in Boston. Then, declaring she would circle the world, Annie Londonderry, according to one newspaper, "sailed away like a kite down Beacon Street." It was, The New York World declared a year later, "the most extraordinary journey ever undertaken by a woman."

I tried to listen to a book about her, got bored by it and wasn't able to finish it. According to the part that I read, she was a self-promoter and may not have done many of the things she claimed to do.

YMMV

I find it a facinating story, whether she did fudge or not.

Hi pubb,

I do not know, but the bicycle was a Columbia ladies bike she rode from Boston to Chicago before being presented the Sterling in this pic.

I read the entire book and I agree with all of your conclusions. Little is known about much of her foreign travels. Some of the USA parts were interesting. But by the time I finished the book, I was underwhelmed and concluded that the subject didn't merit an entire book.
