Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Look 566 vs. Orbea Onix TDF vs. Pinarello FP3 vs. others

Hi,

I've got Bianchi brava for three years. It is good bike for long distance. I'm in Cat 4 with this bike.

Now, I'm considering a new bike, although I will keep the heavy bike for training.

Around 3k~3.5k, which is the best bike?
Look 566 vs. Orbea Onix TDF vs. Pinarello FP3 vs. others

Thanks.

I recently bought an Opal, and rode then Onix when I was test riding. I was really impressed with the bike, and it seemed like a good deal.

How did the Opal compare to the Onix in ride? I did the same thing recently and wondering how different the ride is.

Orbea no longer makes the TDF. https://www.orbea-usa.com/fly.aspx?la...epage&taxid=57

I loved my Onix until I traded it in for an Orca.

Your pricing is way high. You can get an Onix for less than $2,000.

The new Onix is stiffer than the old one. The older model Opal was much stiffer than the Onix. Cosmetically it also had the wider carbon weave, while the Onix had the narrow weave.

I have not ridden the new Opal.

My opal is an 08, but I bought it new a month or so ago. It is stiff as can be. I didn't do any serious hammering, but the Onix seemed fairly stiff too. My sales person said the Opal and Orca use a bit higher grade carbon, so they will be a bit stiffer but also soak up the bumps really well. For what its worth, the Onix road great and I would have no qualms about getting one.

Tell me about your Orca. I am seriously looking at a 2009 model. I am 6'2" and weigh about 200 pounds, so I am build sort of like Super Mario, only I am better looking than he is...

There have been a bunch of threads lately about Orbea frames cracking. I wouldn't read into them too much in terms of statistical validity - I know a couple guys who ride them and love them (and haven't cracked them).

I'm (highly) biased towards the Pinarello, but I (heart) Italian trash by nature. Ride 'em all and see what you think. I (heart) my FP2.

I'm in the same boat, I'm looking at exactly the same bikes. I was quoted at the 566 with SRAM Force/Rival around 2,700. My LBS told me to hold out some to see if there were any FP3 closeouts coupled with a 2010 Force gruppo at around the 3k mark. That's what he expected, but it's been about a week and a half since I've heard word. I would much rather the FP3 but if time delays and it seems as if the FP3 will take longer to piece together and ultimately cost more, I might just opt for the 566 right now with the 2010 Force and a nice wheelset. I'm still reading up on reviews and what people think about both, this thread nails it for me.

I am very happy with my 566...

If your looking to spend 3500 start with the 2500 566 and just change some pieces....I changed the bars and stem....

Still looking at seat posts...

I my 2009 Orca!

For a quick overview, it truly is stiff yet compliant (I know, I could write for Bicycling). It's a huge upgrade over my 2007 Onix. Here's a few photo's: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...highlight=orca

Thanks guys.

Thanks you guys.

One thing I don't get is the difference between 105 and ultegra set. Is there a big gap between these for $600 or so?

Plus, to 2WheelFury, have you ever tested FP3? I guess there would be a bit difference between FP2 and FP3, but I'm not sure. I haven't tested Pinarello bikes yet.

Usually the differance is weight and looks...everything that looks cool is more expensive. LOL

There might be some functional differances but I am not sure about Shimano...I am a Campy man...

OP- There are a lot of GREAT bikes in that price range. honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them. seriously. THere are very few $2500 bikes that aren't nice. Just test ride them and find one that fits you will and feels the best.

Personally, I would take the Look bike out of those that you mentioned. Also, have you considered a Time frame? I love the look of Time frames and they are probably right in that price range as well. Then there is Parlee. I have seen a few of those on the forums that looks spectacular. And, of course, there are always the Specialized and Trek bikes which you should be able to get your hands on for a test ride.

As far as your last question goes, I PERSONALLY don't think there is that much of a difference. I would rather spend the extra $600 on a nicer frame and just use 105. 105 is good and durable. I'm sure some people here will call me an idiot, but I recently rode a friend's bike that had 10 speed Dura Ace on it and it didn't feel any better than my 9 speed 105. Just my $.02

I would sell the stock wheels and use profits + the $600 to buy better wheels.

As already stated at your price point you're going to get a decent bike so it's more a question of what you can get in terms of good fit and better components. I have an 08 Onix and think it's a great bike, no issues whatsoever.

Thanks.

I thought Time is so expensive. I should think about it. But, unfortunately there no Time dealer near here. Hm.....

I was able to test ride the Pinarello FP-3 with the Shimano 7900 group. Very sweet ride. May need to be my next bike but now I may need to check out the Look...

I am sure they are all very nice bikes....I have own 3 carbon bike and the Look 566 is the latest. All 3 I road and there were huge differences.

I think the 566 is a great bike...I have not ridden the others so I am sure they are too. I have a good friend that rides a Pinarello and LOVES it.

My older carbon bike was a 2006 model...and the difference to today was amazing. Again....Orbea and Pinarello have both changed designs a bunch lately....

For me Look seemed to be not really changing so much...they simply sent the 566 to China too be produced....I am not knocking the others at all.....

But I am very happy with my Look 566....6'1" 200 lbs XL Frame...it far surpassed my old frame...
