Are those water bottle holes a problem? wtf did someone do to it? Too rusty? $300 too much?

I would imagine that it is repairable but just how much do you want to spend to repair it? Either way, the decal is toast if you try to repair it.

Is the whole rig worth springing $300 for? It is pretty unique but obviously has some condition issues.

I wouldn't buy it. Someone who collects old and rare frames would likely keep looking. But that's my opinion.

Also I would have to drive ~2+ hours, I'll probably pass.

No way. Maybe for $100 and if it was 20 minutes away.

I'd say $89 and 12 minutes.

Based on the seatpost, you'd have to assume it's had some serious exposure. Who knows how much water it's taken in through those holes? What a shame.

What a shame! Didn't the owner know that you CAN buy nice enough clamp on bottle mounts?? I wonder how he got the nuts in the tube to line up way in there for bolts...... unless.....he just went ahead and used big, ugly wood screws to just bite into the edges of those holes. Yecchh!!
A good frame builder can still put water bottle bosses over those holes, but it might not be worth the cost.

Also looks like the seatpost is completely corroded in place.

Price too high, distance too far, unless you really want it.

The holes are what they are, awful but not in a place that's all that likely to cause frame failure. I guess I'd do something to hide them, such as clamp a water bottle cage over them, and pretend they're not there. That's assuming I had the bike already, of course.

I'm guessing the seatpost will come out okay, but what do I know.

Bummer, each picture the excitment grew then POW! That's a real shame.

Those look similar to Capella lugs, were they not Carlton's proprietary lug?

$300 and whatever miles to drive? Nope, not worth it.

Shoot the owner and take his bike away, maybe.

Okay, that was a bit harsh, but I do hate it when people destroy potentially collectible things like this. It's like converting a bike to fixie/SS - nothing wrong with it, but very wrong IMO to dremel off all the shift tabs and stuff. At least leave it so you can put everything back on the way God or the original bike designer intended it to be

This may be a bad idea.... but would a rivnut be a good idea for that frame? If you could get it way cheaper that is.

I'd try to save it, but not for $300.

What is the connection between Merlin and Carlton? It has Carlton Capella lugs. Raleigh used them, but only after they bought out Carlton.

I kind of liked the shooting part.

The bike's not ruined, and I'd have a blast figuring that out without damaging the decal any more. BUT
It's not free, or even close, so it's not worth the risk-taking.

Tell you what JP, sell me your Paramount for $300 and I'll give you a ride to go get it.

I believe the holes could be filled with JB weld & touch up painted. You could probably reproduce the decal in the computer & maybe add a world champion stripe to cover the lower hole. So cosmetically the problem is solvable but is the frame structurally sound?

JB weld is something the guy that drilled the holes would use . That stuff is made for children and Huffy's. Awe heck, Huffy's deserve better.

How about some window screen, rolled, placed in the seat tube & covered with sheet rock mud?
