Tumble update

I posted about taking a little low speed tumble a couple of weeks ago. Many replies with good wishes - I really appreciate it, thanks

So, all was going well - healing up with no infection, and some mobility coming back, following the physio's advice to move as much as I could stand. All well until Sunday last, D16 after the tumble, still in the company hospital.

Got moved onto the bed Sunday for the removal of the last 20 staples
over the incision. There was a loud twang followed by pain.

I was back at general infirmary on Monday. 2 new stress
fractures - apparently the
position of the pins inserted after the accident transferred mechanical leverage lower down the
femur, resulting in 2 new breaks.

Very ouch indeed. Suggested course of action is lots of bed rest - I'm
relieved to say, as the possibility of further surgery which was being
considered this morning was not at all attractive.

Something of a set back. Heigh **

Hang in there and heal fast. Better days are coming. That TWANG had to just floor you. I had both hips replaced last year and was "grounded" for 3 months. But your injury and pain exceed my experience. You gotta demand of yourself that each day you will do something good for yourself and someone else. The time drags by, but once its behind you, you appreciate everything more.

And, I hope indicating that I'm retaining a sense of ironic humour

As if getting broken limbs from a 2 mph step-off wasn't serious enough, the kind ER professionals cut off my best pair of Assos shorts with shears rather than tugging the tighties over a break.

And now it feels like one more regrettable consequence

Your sense of humor is intact and I get it. Gallows humor ftw.

I'm especially sorry about the Assos. I've priced them and my insurance policy won't pay for their replacement, should I buy a pair that meet a fate like yours.

And the bike is fine, I presume?

Sending positive vibes for your speedy recovery.

Geeze Wob, sorry things aren't going as smoothly as they could. Sooner or later the smoke is going to clear away and things will get back to the way they were. Hang in there.

Geezer,
Sorry that you had a set back. Prayers and thoughts are coming for you. Take it easy and rest up so you can heal up well.

The humor is making it through, mixed with the courage in the face of adversity. May the bed rest part of your recovery prove itself short.

So do you have a time prognosis for when you'll be back in the saddle?

Suggestion is - 2 weeks immobile, then 2 weeks moving around but no weight on the affected leg, then gradual increase in exercise and weight bearing until (3 months or so) back to normal.

(So, I haven't cancelled the planned May '10 tandem trip from London to Marseilles! - But I haven't paid the deposit either - I'll take the decision after a few more weeks)

Thanks, once again, for all the kind wishes

So you have 6 months before the tandem trip. That sounds like a close call to me. I'm thinking you're smart to hold off for a bit before making a money committment. Hope the rest of the healing process goes well.

It has struck me how profoundly my lifestyle has been changed by such a relatively minor bike tumble.

Sorry to head about the setback and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I would be upset about the shorts, too. I doubt any of them were cyclist and knew how much they cost.

Your attitude, toughness, and sense of humor (through pain and frustration) are things to be admired. Good wishes for getting back as fast as possible. Not much consolation, but this is the best season of the year for this to happen.

Thanks for the good wishes.

I wasn't upset about the shorts - just mentioned them as a kind of 'to add insult to injury...' sort of thing, not serious at all

In fact at the time, if they'd asked 'how much will you pay us not to drag these over your broken leg?' they'd have got me up to the national debt of the UK without a moment's thought of eventual settlement!
