Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Does anyone have any tips about riding around Lake Placid?
-is it safe?
-what time of day is best to ride (I will be there for a week in early August)
-good routes/ climbs

Any info would help!

-the traffic in and around the town of Lake Placid can be tough that time of year, but it's no worse than any other tourist destination during tourist season. It's safe.

-Anywhere you go once you leave town is great riding. NYS 73/Cascade road between Keene and Lake Placid is a pretty good 8 mile long climb. Head out towards Jay, Upper Jay, Elizabethtown, Whiteface, almost anywhere. Get a local map. You can only climb Whiteface in late afternoon once the entrance booth closes the road to cars, or really early in the morning. Be prepared for lots of incredible scenery.

-best time of day is sun-up to sun-down.

You might want to get in touch with the folks at a couple of the local bike shops, Placid Planet and High Peaks Cyclery. Each of them have some bike routes on their sites, and Placid Planet organizes some century and half century rides during the season as well. It is a beautiful area for cycling, especially if you like to climb, and you can't really go wrong in any direction. Rte. 73 can be a nice ride, but look for a time when the traffic will be light, as there's not much shoulder in spots. In addition to the suggestions above, there are some nice rides possible out to the West, toward and beyond Saranac Lake, for instance. Enjoy!

Move to the side of the road my ass !

I'd never ever ride there. HTFU against a croc, not a good idea.

Lake Placid NY or Lake Placid FL?

For NY take a look at the Lake Placid Triathlon site. That is a 56 mile loop, not too bad on the first lap, but sucks pretty bad on the second lap.
