Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

110lbs is too heavy for R-Sys. Run away.

From what I've seen on this forum, you're about 185 lb too heavy for those wheels.

Even if they held up, they're a ridiculous design from a performance standpoint. They are built like wagon wheels, and they're as aerodynamic as wagon wheels.

R-SYS wheels fill a much needed void in the bicycle wheel marketplace.

It all depends on your health insurance plan.

But they're carbon fiber wagon wheels ... They must be good !

Don't worry. Someone who owns a pair will come in eventually and ruin the consensus.

I wouldn't ride on the R-Sys if they were given to me. I think the tech section on Velo News had a little review / discussion when a front wheel imploded on their tech and he got hurt.

you'd have to be an idiot to buy r-sys wheels, whether you're 135#, 185# or 200#.

OP, I think what we are trying to say is that even if Mavic "fixed" the R-sys the consensus is that we don't trust them.

If you want the answer to your question, you can probably find out the "max weight" on Mavic's website.

I still say, look away from the light.

BTW, most wheels that have a "max weight" should not be ridden by a 185 pounder...

1) the Velonews incident was a post re call wheel. https://velonews.competitor.com/2009/...-failure_93054

2) The Pace's Ferry pic shows the problem with catastrophic failure from an impact. (Getting crossed up with spokes is not good, but the wheel shouldn't disintegrate.) Doubt the redesign eliminated that problem.

3) Why would anybody with a question of whther they were too heavy for a wheel possibly pick this wheel set?

4) there are a lot of better, more aero wheels that will easily hold up to 185lb riders. There is just no reason anybody would want to mess with these wheels given their track record.

To be fair I bought mine before all the todo about them, they are very light for aluminum clinchers, and I got a good deal on them. They were very nice wheels, aerodynamics aside, and I think they get a little bit of an unfair rep from just a few great incidents.

All that said, I wouldn't buy them now, certainly not at full price, and I wouldn't race on them, but I would not hesitate to use them otherwise. And someone is getting a good deal on my old set, especially considering that the new front has never been used.

+1 to points 3 and 4 above.

I checked mavic's website and didn't see a max weight. If you are dead set (pardon the expression) on these wheels, check with your authorized Mavic dealer.

here is my r-sys story of the day. I'm riding along in a pretty freaking fast ride and I look over to my right and this rider has R-Sys wheels. I know the guy and I say, "hey, did you see the article in Velo News about the wheel failure of the R-Sys wheel?

response: "I've got the updated wheels so I'm good to go"
my response: "Those were the updated wheels"

His jaw dropped and he then got vigorously dropped.

I have another friend that bought a bike with R-Sys wheels. We switched over to his training wheels because he got the bike in the winter. The recall happened, he got the free set of wheels and sent the R-Sys off for the fix. He got them back and the've never seen pavement.
