Road ID - It's who I am, but I must be fading away!
I tried the search with no luck (BF search function does suck, btw).
Anyway, after last year's Road ID thread I went ahead and bought one.
I only wear it on solo rides, which is about half the time. It's not even a year old and the lettering is fading...it is very hard to read unless you hold it at just the right angle.
Has anyone had this problem, and has anyone gotten a favorable reply from the company?
Doug

Wrist ID, been using it for 2 years(?), it is slowly turning into a ghost, I figured I would buy a new one next month. They really are not expensive...

Mine is the wrist one. It is really fading much sooner than I expected. If I get a new one, I may put some invisible tape over it in hopes of preserving it.
I will probably contact them to see if they will replace it for free, or for a discount...but was wondering if this strategy has worked for anyone in the BF collective.

From the Road ID site's FAQ page:
Are Road IDs guaranteed?
Of course! We even offer a "real" guarantee - you know, like companies used to offer. If you are not satisfied with your order for any reason, you can return it for a full refund or exchange. Additionally, our stainless steel ID carries a lifetime guarantee. That's right, if you are tough enough to wear out our stainless steel, laser engraved Road ID, we will replace it at no charge. We challenge you to destroy them (through natural wear - gunshots and hand grenades don't count).
NOTE: Our lifetime guarantee applies to the stainless steel ID plate only. The bands and straps that they are attached to are not covered for life. We do, however, offer low-cost replacement bands and straps for all of our IDs.

^^ Thanks, I hope they honor this. Here is a copy of an email I just sent them:
Hi,
I bought a Road ID less than a year ago, the wrist version.
I thought it was a very good product.
However, over the past few months I noticed the lettering is fading away. It is becoming very hard to read unless one holds it at just the right angle...and I suspect it will become completely unreadable in the next few months.
It has been well cared for, I don't think it has even gotten wet or been washed.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Doug

I take a photo copy of my driver's license and insurance card with my cell which has my emergency numbers in it. I also have info inside my helmet.

Order Army dog tags instead next time. They are embossed raised lettering. Don't have to worry that it will ever fade. Lots of online places will make them and ship them to you.

Not enough, IMO. I believe you're best served wearing ID around your wrist or your neck. There are just too many scenarios where first responders are not going to take the time to search you stuff or your phone, assuming your clothes/bike gear/phone doesn't get lost, broken, or shredded when you go down.

Yep you are right... as a first responder I will not dig through your phone initially trying to figure out not so much who you are, but what your medical history is (if you can not talk). I will though, look for bracelets/necklaces that identify any medical conditions you might have. If you have none, put none on your road ID. EX... NKDA... to paramedics it means "No Known Drug Allergies" No HX... no medical history, No Meds.... no medication taken regularly. You can put something like... HX on cell/ICE.... History on cell phone under ICE (In Case of Emergency)... if you have some sort of medial history that you need to comunicate to medical folks..
Most of us have some sort of cell phone that you can put notes under contact information... or have an ICE number, someone to call in an emergency that knows about you and some of your conditions.

I had thought they were actually engraved and goop added to the depressions.... I'm having the same problem, mine is about half legible. I wish I had thought of the clear nail polish before mine starting looking like crap.

I ordered a new one after 3 years as the old was faded. The new version is much darker than the previous version.

Maybe you're like a character in one of those movies where you'll fade away unless the audience believes really hard in cyclists. The less they believe, the more you fade.
By the end of the movie, you'll have your answer. And whoever plays you in the movie will never get another acting gig because everywhere he goes, he'll get harassed because he's the guy who played the cyclist in that movie. Type casting is rough.

Being someone who just got nailed by a car I can say I wish I had a road id the other week and I just ordered one. Fortunately I was semi conscious and able to answer questions and give them the password to get into my cell phone to tell them who to call. Had I been out cold it would have taken them hours to get in touch with my family if not longer.
