I sold my motorcycles last week and decided to move my bikes from in the house to the garage. It really brought it home when I saw all of mine and my wife's bikes lined up in one place, I could start a small shop. So my question is how many is too many and what's the number in your stable.

I am not a sentimental owner or collector and can't really use more than 3 bikes effectively. That said, I have 2 road bikes, 1 cross bike and one mtb. I generally buy one, sell one.

While I answered 4-5, I suppose that jumps to 8 if I add the wife and daughters.

I answered 1-3 - these are the bicycles I normally ride. However, I also have a vintage Peugeot hanging on a wall that I rarely ride, and a trainer in the basement that I never ride any more. Also, my wife has two and my son 1. So, all-in-all, I have 8 in the household.

I have two. A few years ago I had three, two road bikes and a commuter bike. The older, back-up road bike seemed to stay at home a lot so I sold it. Now I have a road bike and a CX bike --- but I've been eyeing another road bike.

My wife has her old diamond back hybrid, my youngest - her Fuji & her Raliegh (which needs to get sold), my older daughter has the Trek I found on the trash heap and I have my commuter, my climber and my cruiser.

I'm in the 6 - 10 camp if you count only complete bikes. I have 5, my wife has 2. There are some frames hanging around waiting to become complete bikes once again when I get around to it.

See my signature. The two Capos are currently down (#2 remains a project bike, and #1 has a broken rear axle), but the other three complement each other nicely: full ATB/mountain (Schwinn); transportation/beater/commuter (Peugeot); club/fun (Bianchi).

I have my Xtracycle, a Gitane mixte, a Univega mountain bike, a Raleigh mountain bike, a Mercier road bike, and a Schwinn mountain bike. Strangely enough the X gets all the bike bling and most of the miles.

I have more than one because each has a purpose or a history with me. My Pinarello Trevisio steel road bike, great for Sunday outings and the occasional pretend criterium, my Guercittio SLX steel road bike, good for spanking modern cf bikes, fast and capable over the road, my old Centurion Ironman, rigged for long distances at speed, Centurion Prestige, a knife fighter in mild mannered disguise, my Surly Cross Check because I live down a dirt road and need an all purpose, multi-surface and do anything machine, my Specialized Stumpjumper because a Pinarello does not do well on mountain single track. One bike, no way.

I have 4 with one 73 Raleigh Supercourse unassembled, boxed and ready for shipping. Just sent away my Dahon folder to my brother last week. I hope he enjoys it. The Marin and Trek are my active bikes right now with one being a back up ride.

I have twelve and have decided to sell two. I like each bike to add something different (MTB, cross, SS, TT, etc.) My work room in the basement has permanent hanging space for 9, floor space for 4, and two work stands. I have some temporary joist hangers that can hold several more. I have a bike of the week poster at work that's up to 140. Each week it shows a different bike I've built or refurbished and kept or sold to support my hobby.
I was headed out to work last week when I noticed my rear wheel was flat. It was a simple matter to swap out to another bike for the commute.

This is my Rain bike: A 1978 Trek 400d Elance, this bike has a modern 20 speed Ultegra drivetrain, the wheels are Open Pro rims on Dura Ace hubs;



My Soma Double Cross Has a 30 speed road triple drivetrain, It's good for longer hilly rides and is very comfortable on a long day



My Lynskey built Titanium road bike is also good for 200k;

Felt F75, but I'm not crazy about the 50/34 crank. My other road bike has a 53/39 and it works just fine on the hills around here.

I have 3 bikes that get a lot of miles:

- Davidson, for long rides in all kinds of weather
- Tommasini, just modernized, for shorter rides, dry days only
- Boedie, commuting, rain storms, light touring

Bike number 4 is a project bike that I'm not riding much, will either get finished or sold later this year,

- 1988 steel Specialized Stumpjumper, converted to a bad-weather commuter bike; I don't use it very much, cause the Boedie up above will plow through anything on paved roads. I am thinking about converting it into a dirt-road drop-bar bike, selling it, or turning it back into a mountain bike.

I answer "4" bikes in the poll, but my garage also houses two of my son's bikes:

- Trek mountain bike
- vintage Panasonic touring bike

I have 1 inexpensive hybrid, 1 folder, and 1 full supsension mountain bike. The folder is my everyday transportation/utility bike and gets ridden most. My live-in boyfriend also has a mountain bike, which he uses for all-purpose riding.

I'm trying to keep the stable at 7, since that's all the practical room I have for fully assembled bicycles (2 more unassembled bikes are stored away). Of that 7, only two of them are currently used as dedicated commuters, the rest are retired commuters that now serve as family outing bikes.
