Michelin Pro 3 Question

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Michelin Pro 3 Question

After ~6.5K miles my GP4000's rear wheel just eroded. I was wiping it with my glove after a ride and the thread just peeled off in several places, almost like a really bad road rash. My wife got me some Michelin Pro3 when they were on sale at REI a couple months ago so I put them on today. I was meaning to exchange them but here I am tireless.

First of all are they really not good on durability?

Second why does their 23 look skinnier than 20 Continental's Competition Tubs.

And 8 bar limit only isn't that like 110.

I know they are race only tires or are they

The only thing I like about them was their ease of mounting.

There was so much wind that I did not even notice anything about the ride today

Will I even get 1K miles out of them?

Thanks!

You got 6,500 miles from your Conti? I'm lucky to get 1500!

I get about 2000 on P3Rs, if I'm lucky.

I've used my PR3s as my daily riding tire while in Oman. Recently took it on a 4-day ride through the Himalayas on roads that ranged from smooth to chip-seal to horrendous. Only 1 flat, and that was a long pin. Been working great and is probably my favorite tire at the moment (I like it better than the GP4000s - feels faster and more supple), although I still have to try the Schwalbe Ultremos and Vittorie EVOs.

this tire has been discussed many times here, but if you must know, I use them. I managed to get 1500 miles out of mine before the sides started to harden within a year. I took them off the instant they started to lose grip on a turn doing 35mph. otherwise, excellent tire, very smooth, great transition when leaning left to right, low rolling resistance, great for racing, but if you ride in areas that have goat heads/thorns, be prepared to fix a flat often.

i rode/raced on p3rs. its a really strong race tire, but i found it to be lacking in the everyday training department. it just really didn't have any flat protection, so i just transfered it over to my strictly race wheels. i would recommend michelin krylion carbons. i use them for everyday training and even a few races. they're great. great flat protection, not slow at all for a strong tire, and also have pretty good grip.

BTW thanks. Yes I got 6.5 K out of my conti, mounted late October 2009 after our first snow. That mileage is estimated based on the fact that I commute almost 100% with the bicycle I have them on. It is 115 miles a week X 40 weeks (I have 4 week vacation days and 10 day holidays - of course I ride on my vacation and holidays). I also ride most weekends and AM and afternoons during the longer day months during the work week. I do have another road, a cargo bike bike plus a fixie with Contis for 2 years now and they haven't disintegrated out of dry rot.

Anyway I have read they are not long lasting tires, so maybe I should not even ask. I was just hoping someone had better luck than the median experience. I put stans on the tubes of all my bikes and change the tube every six months and that seems to help. I am not heavy also. I will be picking up Contis after Xmas.

Here's a pic of my 2 PT computers since April and March 2009 (the 11K had 3K previously, so that is still 8K). I also have a iBike and a POS speedo on the other bikes. I don't record everything or even have the PT most commute days. I am not by any means a PCAD/umd/10 wheels or a mileage contender, but not an internet armchair cyclist either.

PR3's ride and grip a little nicer than GP4000's. They last a little less well and puncture a bit easier (and cut up a LOT easier, but that's pretty irrelevant). After riding the last two years switching between both I really don't see there's that much between them.

And I get a LOT more than 1000 miles out of my PR3's.

I just looked at the Pro3 on the rear wheel of my bike. 1,400 miles on the road and probably 10 trainer hours and it looks like I'll get another 500+ miles easy. I like these tires a lot and when the rear is toast, I'll rotate the front tire back there and get a new one for the front.

116 PSI is more than enough for my 190 lardo ass (I can say that). I run 116 PSI in the back and 95 PSI at the front with no pinch flats.

They ride very nice but I aveage a flat every 200 miles or so. The comfort of the PR3 in 25 is worth it.

FYI, I just got an email today from Competitive Cyclist ... they have a 2 for 1 sale (today only) on said Michelins. I don't use them, or I'd be buying several.

I just swapped my GP4000 for a set of Pro3 on my C'dale. My GP4000 had what looked like dry rot on the sidewalls and in the edges of the top tread. It would crumble off as I ran my fingers over the tire. No outside storage or even an overnight out. Always cleaned after a ride and then wiped down. I really hope I can get 1000 miles out of the Pro3, I'll settle for a good handling and strong riding tire for this old man.

Best of luck if you keep them on the bike.

Bill

Any chance you could share that code? Mine went to my spam & I deleted it by accident.
