Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Climbed Haleakala in Maui

Just got back from climbing Haleakala. It was a tough climb, but not terrible. The grade was never too steep. Nice 5-7% grades the whole way for the most part. The descent was cold but super fast and fun. The climb from Hana Hwy/Baldwin to the summit took 4hr2min.

Thanks for sharing- looks like a great time. I'll be honeymooning in Maui this summer and was just starting to look at places to ride.

I hope your other half is cool with that, otherwise the marriage may be short lived

I worked for the Park service there for a summer. It was a great spot. I'd love to go back.

Ben doesn't fool around once the road turns up. Now I can say I know someone who has done that climb.

Did you stop to rest along the way at all? Food, picturetime break?

Congrats on making it to the summit! I did this ride last year in Jan, made it to the visitor's center. I blame the humidity, the weather, and not bringing enough (or all, rather) of my bike, and the rental bike, among other excuses. Someday I'll go back and finish it.

Next time, if there is a next time, try jogging into the crater. Its really quite an experience, like being on a desolate planet. Its so quiet in there. Yet, you can shout and actually hear several echoes. Some people camp out there.

Interesting that HR seems to be dropping during the climb. I would have thought the opposite given the thinner air and, from the seemingly constant speed and grade, a constant power output

I find that threshold HR drops with altitude. Also not what I expected.

lots of switch-backs near the top is the reason for the HR anomaly.
