If they had time to make a silly virtual training partner, they could have built a reality check into the software that reads the GPS. It's a safe bet that cyclists won't out-sprint the speed of sound.

Why use a GPS? If you get lost, at least you won't run out of gas... maybe. I just like to bike around back roads and discover stuff, why do you need a GPS on your bike?

which model do you have? how often does this happen? ive been thinking about getting a garmin but not if this is common

I've had that happen once or twice in two years. What's more annoying is that lately the damn thing doesn't want to turn on unless I plug it into a power source, even if the battery is full - and it has been refusing to download some of my rides recently. Edge 305.

Any GPS will do this occasionally - the Oregon 550t I used to have did the same thing sometimes. The way the GPS system works, every now and then an error is going to happen, from atmospheric interference, or things like that. With the Oregon, I'd be on a side road in Seattle, then I'd be in Mongolia for a split second, then back in Seattle again. It's expected that this will happen, and Garmin makes custom software for their stuff; it wouldn't be terribly hard to "throw out" blips in the GPS data stream and switch to dead reckoning for the second or two the system is out. Instead, once a month or so, it's wildly off.
I've been using the Garmin as a bike computer, so it's my odometer.

I've climbed over 30,000 feet in a 20 mile ride on my first Garmin Edge 305. The grade was something like 878%. In New Orleans! The altimeter in Garmins works off barometric pressure rather than GPS, and mine was messed up. Garmin replaced it, no questions asked.

Reminds me of an old Avocet I had, I was reading the specs in the users manual - and it listed the max speed it was capable of registering at something like 399 mph.
