Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

******* unreliable Garmin.

If they had time to make a silly virtual training partner, they could have built a reality check into the software that reads the GPS. It's a safe bet that cyclists won't out-sprint the speed of sound.

Why use a GPS? If you get lost, at least you won't run out of gas... maybe. I just like to bike around back roads and discover stuff, why do you need a GPS on your bike?

I've had that happen once or twice in two years. What's more annoying is that lately the damn thing doesn't want to turn on unless I plug it into a power source, even if the battery is full - and it has been refusing to download some of my rides recently. Edge 305.

Edge 800.

Any GPS will do this occasionally - the Oregon 550t I used to have did the same thing sometimes. The way the GPS system works, every now and then an error is going to happen, from atmospheric interference, or things like that. With the Oregon, I'd be on a side road in Seattle, then I'd be in Mongolia for a split second, then back in Seattle again. It's expected that this will happen, and Garmin makes custom software for their stuff; it wouldn't be terribly hard to "throw out" blips in the GPS data stream and switch to dead reckoning for the second or two the system is out. Instead, once a month or so, it's wildly off.

I've been using the Garmin as a bike computer, so it's my odometer.

I would suspect that riding in Mongolia is more difficult than Seattle. The water crossing must have been a real *****.

I've climbed over 30,000 feet in a 20 mile ride on my first Garmin Edge 305. The grade was something like 878%. In New Orleans! The altimeter in Garmins works off barometric pressure rather than GPS, and mine was messed up. Garmin replaced it, no questions asked.

My Garmin Etrex is just perfect for that! I switch it on and go out and do the most amazing, meandering ride I like, in places that I've never been to before. When I decide it is time to go home, I don't have to worry about finding my way, I just do a trackback to the start point.

Best of both worlds!

Because some people, specifically my wife, don't like getting calls like "Honey, my chain broke. Can you come pick me up? I'm on a backroad somewhere. It's about 15 miles from home, so just draw a circle on the map and try all the ones that cross the circle."

It must have been. I'm surprised 100 psi was enough to keep me afloat. The thing is, I did it so fast I don't even remember the ordeal...

Yeah, I had one of those computers that improved my performance too.
I did 75 mph under my own power once.
It always happened by this cell phone tower.
I was awesome when I'd pass that cell phone tower!

Isn't that about the speed that satellites fly?

Ha, weenies - I got a peak power of 4200W last week. Without even trying to go for max.

Cav started crying again after I published the files, I am told.

No, Cav just crashed again, that is why he was crying.

Someone said "If you get a GPS, you can't make **** up." You don't need to; the GPS will make stuff up for you.

Luckily my sonic booms didn't break any windows or anything. Nobody is suing me.

Reminds me of an old Avocet I had, I was reading the specs in the users manual - and it listed the max speed it was capable of registering at something like 399 mph.
