Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Post Ride Recovery/Reward Meal Thread

I just finished a nice 33 mile ride with some climbing. I didn't eat much before the ride, so I was pretty hungry afterward. Here's what I ate: can of Mott's Apple juice, a banana, $1 size bag of Lay's chips, handful of peanut M&M's, handful of almonds.

Not my first choice of post ride food, but it's what was handy and quick. Typically as a reward after a more lengthy ride, I look forward to a burger with fries, especially In-N-Out.

So go ahead and post your post-ride food secrets and tips. There will be no judgment. OK, maybe just a little.

I usually go for Humus and pita bread. Sometimes I throw a beer into the mix (usually Blue Moon or Newcastle).

I'm not usually that hungry right after a ride. Probably because I eat a lot before a ride and some during the ride....

My first reaction is to say you're not doing it (riding) right. I often can't eat enough for at least a day. I do eat on the ride, but maybe not enough. I think I am, but probably not.

Best ride/meal combination is rent a cabin at the top of Palomar Mtn., descend down, do two repeats and on the third time down have a large horchata and refill water @ Pedro's, and on the third time up have an omlette and potatoes from Mother's.

Guaranteed this will seem like the best post-ride meal ever even though it's actually pretty average.

Rode 90 miles today and had a cannoli from Cannoli Plus in Bensonhurst; was pretty satisfying.

I hear ya re Mother's, but instead of South Gate repeats, why not a nice local, long loop, starting and ending at the top?

Does the bottle say "Bottled in Mexico?"

South grade is the hardest by far although the view of the plains on E. Grade are nicer IMO. Trust me after 3 repeats of SG dog food will taste like Peter Luger. I literally did SG 12 times in 4 days of staying up there. Never again.

Don't get me wrong, I get hungry after a good ride. But usually a couple hours later. I'm a big believer in keeping the body fueled before and during the ride.

The problem is that some of you don't even bother to do the ride--you just skip right to the meal.

Most of my long rides end about lunch time. I like to have a very modest lunch, like one PB& J sandwich and then totally scarf out with a huge pasta meal for dinner.
