Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Does smoking Hurt your riding?

Smoking Helps My Riding.

I don't consider myself to have nicotine addiction, as I often will go a couple of weeks without burning a lung rocket, but I do definitely enjoy my smoke. I'm starting to get invigorated by the perpetual circle that is coming from having a cigar on the weekends.

I'm 26 and though I've grown out of my real smoking habit, I like to overindulge on the weekends, but unfortunately thats also when I like to ride. The two do not mix, the wind makes it harder to light it up and it burns too fast. If I have a morning group ride I have to forgo the smoking because all the health nuts complain, but if I'm going to be riding solo, I smoke the night before because it make my lungs stronger it will be ok, then when I wake up feeling awesome, heart racing, and a case of the xactlys, I decide to go out all day . Well, after a while of feeling like awesome, I decide to have a cigar or something just to take the ow factor out of my day. One puff in and I start to feel buzzed because I'm a light weight and then I'll have another round. well, now I'm riding way to much today!! tomorrow doesn't look good either as I'll likely be wearing out my tires.

It's a vicious circle. I want to tell myself to STFD and get off the bike anyway, but I'm really scared that my body will shut down on me and get fat if Im not riding in 100+ degree weather. I don't know how to ride at anything lower than 95% and I get bored with it if I'm not riding at all.

Other than the obvious which is to not smoke, what should I do? My roommate says smoke more and ride the bike anyway, I say hell no. My lungs say smoke more all together, but that's difficult. Anyone else in the same predicament? I'd like someone to chat with about how to balance out the heaters and exercising.

Cliff's Notes:

I'm a nicotine addict. I want to ride my bike but can't stop smoking. Need someone to be like me and help me figure out a strategy. Posting about it on the internet because I dont know where else to ask. Tried SA, that was a wake up call, and definitely taught me I'm not a crack addict. lol

I wish someone would do a parody with something I can identify with .. like fresh baked goods...

There is an evil bakery 40 km (25 miles) from me ... it has lured me in and negated the caloric output of my ride too many times.

The trick is to HTFU and cycle harder.
Burn enough through pedal hammering and sweating like a pig and you can eat those things every day and still lose weight.
I know I do

i quit smoking in favor of dipping once i started riding more. do you think that dipping hurts my riding, as, i believe, nicotine constricts blood vessels? discuss...

Many years ago, cycling & exercise was my motivation to quit. I don't quite understand how the smoking makes your lungs stronger / you ride better. What if you transition to nicorette gum while riding?

Donuts and pastries hurt my riding.

Actually I take that back. They make me stronger.

I freaking love them, but eating one is enough to make me feel guilty enough to push a little harder on my next ride.

you're either one hell of a professional troll, or absolutely nuts. Just google cancer pictures and look at that **** man. Back in the '80s I did smoking and health litigation with one of the larges law firms in the country. There are over 1000 NON-tobacco constituents in a cigarette. That's over 1000 additives that sprayed on, added too, or placed into the cigarette for the sole purpose of making you want another cigarette. There is deer tongue in cigarette (I can't say which brand, but trust me on this one). It is an addictive flavorant. Thats why so many people can't stop smoking on the patch or gum, its all the other crap they're addicted to also.

Does smoking hurt my riding? nope, dont smoke. Does it hurt yours? Right now, maybe not, but it will bring your riding to a dead stop (no pun intended). You will begin to develop oat cell carcenoma in your lungs and you will die. Dude, seriously, it ain't worth it. If riding a bike at 45 mph downhill isn't thrill enough for you, take up bungy jumping.

Off my soap box now, but not sorry. As you were.

Go over to the MTB Forum where they regularly toke during rides.
