Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Illuminating the 41

With this:

That's the new Serfas TSL-500 LED headlight. $150 retail, 500 lumens for 1.75 hours, 400 lumens for 2.5, etc., strobe mode. GREAT light, about as bright as the Light & Motion NimH halogen it's replacing, but WAY lighter, self contained in a mini flashlight configuration, they even sell extra batteries if you want to extend the range. This light only weighs 150 grams, that L&M light with the separate battery, cumbersome cord, etc. had to weigh 2-3x that.

Very happy with it, solves all my lighting needs. The only way you'd need more lumens than this is if you were in the woods at night on an MTB at night. But in that case you'd be so stoned you might not even notice it's dark.

That L&M light is rated @ 650 lumens on high beam, but comparing the two units side by side with the Pcad Shed Test ® (it's not as hillbilly kinky as it sounds, it's how bright the lights shine on my shed 200+ feet from my house) the Serfas seemed the same, maybe brighter even though it's rated less bright on high beam.

Also, this light only needs 3 hours for a full charge, charges on a wall outlet or a USB port off a computer.

I have had my oxycodone treats in two months. Could be time for another bike crash or dental surgery.

Bedtime for Uncle Pcad. Early bell tomorrow. Gotta ride.

Is it better than a 900 lumen $99 std or $130 deluxe Magicshine with new battery pack ? I'm going to buy a 2nd one.

How's it handle bumps? My Serfas HL-1.1 doesn't like rough roads and ends up switching between modes constantly.

I was just thinking about starting a light tread in the 41 but I thought the mods would move it to the 259 (Electronics Lighting etc). The 259 does not have the participation of the 41 and the threads are not as current. I spent a few hours trying to go thru it and learned some stuff but it was no fun.

My schedule is forcing me to ride later in the evening or earlier in the mornings and the light is marginal at times.

When Bike Ray gets these back in stock Ill buy one for $180 (1500 Lumens):

https://www.bikerayusa.com/new-bikeray-iv.html

MagicShine (from Geoman) 1000 Lumens for $130 is another option

Nice light, but Magicshine has been illuminating my winter path for two seasons now. Cumbersome cord? Wrapped around top tube. Weight? Sure, 2x to 3x your light, but we're not talking about an anvil here my weight weenie friend.

Do I need a flood or a beam? If I bought one bar mounted light, which one would best suite a roadie riding 20-25 mph at dusk or dawn???

I'm happy with my Magicshine, but have not tried other "real" lights. No matter what, I also bring my Terralux flashlight attached to my bars in case my main light dies for some reason.

It's more convenient, better for me in a few ways. But you can't beat those cheap Magicshine for bang for the illumination buck. This Serfas light is niftier and easier to use however. The pulse feature is great for those days out in the local Black Dirt country where it's fine everyplace else, and Jack the Ripper 100-foot visibility out there for a couple of miles.

I'm getting the Serfas 1000 lumen light. It has an external battery, but is well made, durable and has better spread than the macicrap. This'll be replacing the rather cumbersome AA Dinotte that I've been using. The Dinotte was very convenient and great for commuting, but not so hot for off road or bumpy rides.
