Just out: HTC Highroad to shut the team down!

Without a guarantee that Cavendish will sign on, they couldn't secure a sponsor, and will end the Men's team at the end of this season. Hard to believe!

Yeah. Just nuts.

From Jonathan Vaughter's Twitter: "In what other sport does the top tanked team in the World go belly up because of a shortfall in sponsorship revenue?"

I was wondering about why Cavendish stated that he found a new team.

I think sponsors, or potential sponsors, are worried about Contador and Armstrong's investigations, etc. You would think it's a money making machine, but I guess not.

That just sux. I hope Renshaw follows Cav. Then again, it would be interesting to see them against each other.

I've always wondered what a middle-pack pro level rider makes. I would imagine it would be at least 50k Euro.

The fact that this high profile and massively successful team couldn't even attract a new sponsor is the most profound statement about the pathetic state of pro cycling's business model imaginable. Let's hope the sport is really cleaning up, and that the sponsor dough comes back.

Sponsors are worried about getting their name out there. HTC doesn't have top GC contendors, so the best way for them to get TV time for their sponsor is by winning stages - which Cav does very well. If he's leaving, HTC risks becoming yet another anonymous team that no one pays attention to. That is what has sponsors worried.

Cav isn't stupid, and I don't think he'll be dumping the best leadout team in the world for a season of higher pay in the prime of his career. I suspect there are at least a few riders who will be going with him, which was another part of the problem for HTC.

This. The current business model is marginally sustainable.

The sport needs to be more open and accessible to more people. Imagine if the PGA had just a couple of major tournaments annually, or Formula One held just a few races.

I must be demoralizing for the other riders in the team. You do what you suppossed to do, yet you still lose your sponsor/job.

Over 80% make the minimum - 30,000 euro / $45,000.

Oh, you mean like over 20% of American workers have these last two years? Same deal. It's bad, but a lot of people have the same experience.

That doesn't seem like much, but if their food, clothing, and lodging are paid while in training, then it is a pretty decent salary.

Don't mean to diss those who make at or less than 45K a year in income. Remember, these guys are the very best in the world at what they do. You would think their income would be commensurate with what the "best in the world" would earn. Such it is in pro sports. Only those at the very top make a decent living wage. Consider pro tennis ... only about the top 25 or so make a very good wage. Below that and players are really struggling.

This makes HTC jerseys OK to wear, defunkt team and all. Bet there will be some nice kit sales at PBK and others.

There are a lot worse $45,000 jobs out there.

So, do all those Specialized HTC-edition Tarmacs still in stock become collectors items or unsalable?

Maybe - it depends on whether you're just working for the money and don't get much joy out of your job. If it's just a generic job to make money, it's a very high risk job for little reward. How many bones are you willing to break for a generic $45 K / year job? The answer for me is ZERO. On the flip side, I don't care about the money if it's something I really love to do, which is probably the way these guys look at it.

First, there will be slight price reductions on "rare" HTC jerseys. Then, they will be giving them away for $12 after the news settles in.

They're kind of ugly for riding. Even the Cavendish Edition stayed away from the green and yellow stripes.

That sucks, will be interesting to see how much of the team follows Cav wherever he ends up going.
