Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Holy crap, you have to unscrew the top of the valves!

I just had the biggest facepalm ever. As an engineering student, I feel as though I've disgraced myself and my intelligence just took a nosedive.

You know how I posted in that bike pump thread that pumping up the tires was weird for me? And that they felt squishy even after pumping them up?

Yeah, I've been riding on flats for a while now.

I just realized that in addition to removing the black valve caps, you also have to unscrew this little piece of metal at the top of the valve before the pump will work with it.

Really- don't be embarrassed. Take comfort in the fact that you are a typical engineering student.

One of my friends is an engineer with all kinds of letters after his name. He couldn't figure out how to put wiper blades on his car.

Don't feel too bad.

Wait, you use a pump to put air in your tires? I thought you were supposed to blow them up like balloons?

Well, on every bike I've grown up with you just unscrew the cap and attach the pump. I thought Presta valves were just funny looking and some mechanism inside the pump head took care of opening it.

Why am I posting this? In case there's other "obvious" information, I'd rather learn about it now rather than discover it going 50 mph down a hill.

That's the first reason to hate Presta valves. The next will be when you loosen the nut but they still don't want to fill up (the valves sometimes stick closed and you need to burp them with your finger before putting the pump head on). Then you will break off the stem that little nut screws onto. Then you will pull on the valve hard enough when removing the pump head that the valve will separate from the rest of the tube. There are all kinds of issues with Presta that I never encountered with Schrader valves.

I feel I owe it to idiots everywhere to try to inflate a tube like it's a pool float.

Hey, at least you didn't try returning your "defective pump".

Does anyone remember the faces of death episode with the Engineering students who were celebrating their graduation and attempted to bungee jump from the top of the Engineering building ? Well, apparently, they calculated their height based on the top flor and didn't realize tthe building didnt have a 13th floor. Long story short, the bungee cord was 1 floor too long. They had one less graduate that year.

Well, the tires were pumped when I purchased the bike. I've got about 300 miles on the bike but I've had a knee injury that's kept me off of it for the past month. I try riding it each week to see how I feel.

If you're trying to imply that I'm more active online than I am in real life -- well, you're right. But it's not something I can help. I was running 85 miles a week before I got injured, and so I switched to cycling. But the knee injury isn't working well with it.
